just to give some scenarios that often occur ... and since, as stated, the rules of snooker say, when only the black is on the table, the first pot or foul ends the frame, so the only possible points change is +7 or -7 ...
player A is 14 points (or more) ahead with pink and black on the table so he rolls the pink into the jaws of a pocket ... player B must keep the pink out of the pocket - if he pots the pink, he loses the game cos he is 8 points behind and can only gain 7 with just the black on the table ... you see this often ...
player A is 12 points behind with just the colours left ... he needs to pot yellow to pink (20 points) to put himself 8 points ahead ... he has won, the black makes no difference ...
the rules say you can claim the frame if you are 8 or more points ahead with only the black left on the table ... which is why you often see the player on strike walking away rather than playing the final black ...
for instance ... Ronnie in his "no prize" 147 ... he potted 15 reds, 15 blacks, yellow to pink for 140 and then walked away without playing the black as some kind of protest ... that's not a foul nor could it be construed as ungentlemanly or unsportsmanlike as it is clearly stated in the rules that he is entitled to claim the frame with only the black on the table ...
interestingly, Jan Verhaas asked him to "pot the black for his fans" which Ronnie duly did ... I say "interestingly" because Jan shouldn't really have done that - referees aren't allowed to advise players ...
