Foul on the black

Hello folks,

We had an issue today during my ranking event here in France, and I would like your input.

Here is the scenario:

It's a best of three game. We're in the first frame.
Player A is 7 points ahead on player B with only the black on the table.
Player A plays the next shot but fails to make contact with the black.

What's the issue?
- frame automatically lost after the foul?
- foul is counted and players end up all square with then a respotted black?

We got confused, even with the rulebook so, what is the right decision here?

Erwan: All the answers above are correct - re spotted black - but just to clarify it further the rule states :

Section 3.4 (a) When Black is the only object ball remaining on the table, the first score or foul ends the frame excepting only if the following conditions both apply:
(i) the scores are then equal; and (and in your case - this sentence would apply)
(ii) aggregate scores are not relevant.
(b) When both conditions apply as in (a) above
(i) the Black is spotted
(ii) the players draw lots for choice of playing next; (usually this is by the tossing of a coin)
(iii)the next player plays from in-hand (i.e) from inside the D - not from where the white was on the table after the foul
(iv) the next SCORE or FOUL ends the frame

I hope this makes it perfectly clear to you, so that you don't get this problem again. It does confuse a lot of people and I have actually met players who have been playing snooker for 20 years and are still confused about this particular scenario
