Rules question

Have a scenario from a league game I was marking on Thursday which I think I called incorrectly.

Player potted the pink to go 8 ahead. Instead of shaking hands he attempted to cut the black and missed the ball. I awarded the frame to the other player because I thought any foul on the black. I am now thinking that the frames was already won so I should have still called the foul and awarded 7 points but the frame was already won so I awarded frame to wrong player.

Had a look at the rules and am still not 100%. Anyone know for sure?

Yes sober version correct, when 8 points in front (and only the black left) it is impossible for other player to win, so game over

Indeed. The first foul or pot does end the frame. In this case, the seven point penalty would have been added to the opponent's score, and that would have made him one point less than the player who fouled. That's the final score... frames are won on who has most points on the board, not on who potted or fouled the black.

Don't worry Alan. You're not the first, nor will you be the last, to get the rules wrong. It happens quite a lot. A few weeks ago in my game my opponent asked me to "play again" after a foul. As I got ready to play my shot my opponent said "no I've changed my mind" and despite my protestations the ref allowed my opponent to come to the table and play. The rule states that you can't change your mind. The ref said he was unaware of this. I wasn't happy.
PS Was JT not there? He's usually pretty hot on the rules. Guess it didn't affect the overall result.

there's a lot of common sense in the rules if you just think about it, you'd be pretty peeved if you went to play a plant your oponent had mssed and he was allowed to just change his mind and pot it himself.
few weeks ago i heard two people in my club talking about an impossible snooker and one declared to the other the rules say he'd be allowed a re-rack. I don't kind people making mistakes but i swear some people just make it up as they go along.

Getting confused with Black Ball pool rules by the sound of it. Although I've never played BB rules, I'm pretty sure that you have a rerack with the impossible shot scenario.

I am assuming the 'impossible snooker' situation.
e.g. cue-ball is sitting on a pocket. In front is the black, snookering the player on the final red. In this case, the player MUST attempt to hit the red, with enough pace on the cue-ball to have reached the red had the black not been there. The player cannot just tap the cue-ball into the pocket. In this situation, the referee will not call a Foul and Miss, just the 7 point foul.
A re-rack will not be called in this situation.(see Section 3, Rule 14, opening paragraph).
