  • World Rankings

Just looking at the world ranking list and noticed a load of old players down in the lower reaches, such as Geoff Foulds, Tony Chappel, Tony Knowles etc. How come these guys are still in the rankings? Surely they don't still play in tournaments - I've never noticed them in the early qualifying rounds (which is surely where they would start out with rankings that low).

    Any ideas anyone?

I think that as long as you are still a paid up member of the WPBSA and have been on the professional circuit before, your name will continue to be shown in the rankings.

A bit silly I know but its been like that for as long as I can remember!

You only ever see these names on the World Snooker site. Any other site anywhere else and they're not included. What's bizarre about it is that there are hundreds of ex-pro's who could be included on zero points but only a few ever get listed. I find it irritating if I'm honest and I can't really see how it benefits anyone to have old pro's listed haphazardly when half of them haven't even picked up a cue in years. It's utter nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

Like I said, I think it has something to do with if you are still a member or not. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I heard something along those lines many years ago!

Bit silly if they still get places in the 2013 Crucible qualifiers at the expense of current amateurs getting invites at present, speaking of that, anyone know why the German masters was changed to a ptc format up until the last 32?

The players ypou see in the preliminaries for the world championships are not eligible for the World Amateur Championship due to being members of the WPBSA you have to be a member of the WPBSA to play in the worlds

Doesn't Tony Chappell only play the Seniors though? If you have to be a WPBSA member to play in the seniors, why do we not see Karl Townsend, Dennis Taylor etc onthe WPBSA ranking list? So do these old timers get qualifying spots in the Worlds at the expense of other up and coming players?

No one gets a spot at the expense of anyone. There are an unlimited number of spaces as long as you are a member of the WPBSA, they just add more pre-qualifying rounds if there are more entrants. I remember David Taylor trying to qualify again a couple of years ago, but didn't make it past the pre-quals

Or, to put it simpler, the full ranking list on the World Snooker website (Terry Griffiths etc included) is basically a comprehensive list of everyone who is eligible to enter the World Professional Snooker Championships (should they so wish)

Differing dates on worldsnooker.com,one with the German masters qualifiers conflicting with eptc 6,silly them.
