  • Tip press

I remember some months ago a member was talking about a Tip Press and I'm interested to know if any member bought one ?

  • #2
I can imagine that the metal clamps/presses are very useful. Don't buy the plastic ones however! I made this mistake some years ago and got me something like this: https://www.seyberts.com/products/Tw...101048-24.html.

That thing is absolutely useless, because it's almost impossible to exactly center the rubber band and more importantly, to attach the dim-witted thing properly to a cue.

They make 'em, they sell 'em and people will buy them. Never needed to use one and have been changing tips for decades.

Isn't he talking about some press to Form and harden tips I saw on here a while ago rather than the presses designed to hold the tip while glueing?

HI There is a new thing with elk masters generally they are soft however here is a trick that a friend of mine does

You take the elkmaster tip and you put it into a tin and then you pour milk in tin and you leave it for 48 hours so that the tip gets hard. Then you remove tip for another 48 hours to dry the tip

When this is done you get a vice and you press the tip for another several hours and the tip is ready to play

I read this on the following website www.azbilliards.com and its called MILK DUDDS

Did someone here on tsf tried this

Well, that's almost a classic technique of hardening leather. Only that usually one uses water instead of milk.

I'd say that you don't need to leave it in the water for 48 hours since it's fully soaked much sooner.

What you could do however is this:
. Put it in cold water until fully soaked
. Take it out and clamp it
. Put the leather with the clamp in the oven at around 50°C/120°F until dry

That will make the leather really hard, maybe even too hard...

Yes, you can soak it with milk and honey and microwave it on full power for ten minutes, however, all the best snooker you ever saw from Davis, Hendry, etc, was played with a standard elkmaster and green triangle chalk, no tip presses, drinking fluids or cooking apparatus were used. Believe it or not they just took them out the box and stuck them on with super glue using their fingers and shaped them with a bit of sandpaper or a file. Merry christmas.

I have seen a photo of this press, it has 2 domed metal pieces that attach to each other and a handle to tighten. It not only makes the tip firmer it also shapes it. Somewhere on this site a member talks about it, however I am unable to find that thread.

The link provided by mooneyy is a devise for holding the cue steady when re-tipping.

                            Hi montrealer

As I said, it's like a classic technique for hardening leather. Haven't tried it with a tip myself, sorry.

What I can say almost for sure though, is that the tip will not only harden, but take on the shape of the clamp, too. So most likely you'll have to reshape it afterwards, or use a shaped clamp of some sort.
