This will sound like a stupid question to those who know the answer...but can you fit any cue tip size to any cue - for instance, my current cue tip size is 10mm, but i want a smaller one so i can generate greater spin - is it literally a case of fitting a smaller cue tip on or are any other sizes other than 10mm incompatible with my cue?

basically, no - you cannot have any size tip on a ferrule
you can put a tip that is larger than the ferrule and have an overhang, sometimes called a mushroom tip, this is ok if that is what you like.
but you do not have a tip that is smaller than the ferrule. this will expose the edge of the ferrule, which could: 1) lead to damage to the ferrule, 2) damage to the cloth on the table, 3) damage to the balls you are hitting.Up the TSF! :snooker:

As you can find in so many threads of the coaching section in this forum the amount of spin you can generate mainly depends on your cue action. Another part is the tip itself. If have a bad tip you can't put a lot in the cue ball.
I've tried several cue tip diameters (from 9.0 to 10.0) but for me it is a matter of feel or personal preference the cue tip size I play. The spin I generate comes from my technique (the so called 'timing')!

Get your cue taken down to 9mm it's not expensive Trevor White charged me £20 although it was a cue made by him I personally found the tip much more responsive when I had it thinned from 9.5 but it doesn't necessarily make you a better player. I found it easier for putting side on ball and thin cuts as obviously with a larger tip you hit a larger area of the cue ball
