    Why bother with a spot for green and yellow? What purpose is served by the baulk line beyond the D?

    for English Billiards - the rule of not playing the cue ball in the bulk area directly at an object ball also in the baulk area.
    Sorry don't know the correct wording.

      Good question. As DeanH says, the baulk line needs to go all the way across the table to show whether a ball is in or out of baulk, which is important for billiards. As for the spots, you need to protect the cloth at any point where you are regularly striking a stationary ball, or the vertical component of the force generated will wear a hole in the cloth.
