  • need help about a snooker rule that has stumped me and my mates

hi, this happened at my local club, i will try to explain as best i can.
i was 7 points ahead of my friend, with just the black ball remaining. i tried to pot the black ball, but went in off and potted the white, thus giving my friend 7 points, so the scores were level. the black was left directly over the pocket. my friend went to pot the black when another friend said that the black had to be respotted , which my friend was not too happy about. then to make matters more complicated another friend said that he didnt need to pot the black ,as i went in off that my friend had won, surely with the points tied he cannot win. it all got too complicated and the game was replayed. but we still don't understand what should have happened ,as this had never happened to us before. i hope this makes sense and you can clarify what should have been the outcome. many thanks, gary.

The first foul on the black ends the frame. As the foul, and 7 point penalty resulted in a tied frame, the black is re-spotted. You then toss a coin for first shot on the black.
You may defeat me but I will fight you to the very end!!!!

after the first score or foul on the last Black on table and the scores are then level it is ALWAYS a respot Black, toss coin to decide who goes first

In case it happens again, when the winner of the coin toss gets to elect who takes the first shot at the re-spotted black.

              Fred:

Not to nitpick or anything but you said 'You then toss a coin for first shot on the black'.

That doesn't make it clear that the winner of the toss gets to ELECT who takes the first shot on the black. To my miond there could be some misunderstanding unless that is clearly stated.

I don't know for sure of course, but frazz could have assumed from your statement that the winner of the toss has to take the first shot which is usually what happens when starting a normal frame of snooker and the winner of the toss normally elects to break (although he can put his opponent in first to break off of course).

I've found to my sorrow on here that I have to make everything crystal clear or else there's always someone who misunderstands.
