  • Left handers rest?

I'm absolutely sure this has been asked before, but I can't find the answer to it. I've only hear of it being addressed once by 'Hazel' during a Judd Trump Match.

Why do so many left handed players use the rest with their right hand?
Judd Trump, Mark Allen, Barry Hawkins, Jack Lisowski, I think Tony Meo, and Perry Mans possibly... so on

I always thought, "If you're going to use your right hand to shoot it with the rest because it's a stretch, why don't you just play it right handed."

Also, if you can't reach it with your left hand, because it's too far, using the rest with the RIGHT hand makes it so its still a stretch, just because of the body's geometry. When it cannot be reached, using the rest with the same hand is much much more natural, and would alleviate the problem of it being a stretch.

Never would anyone ever see a right handed player use the rest left handed, because that would be absurd.

    Thanks for reading!

This sounds strange. I´ve never noticed that. Beeing a lefthander myself I would say you have to be really good to change the cue to the other hand. But if there is any advantage, the advantage have to be there for righthanders as well. I would love to see a clip showing the situation.

Also, in this video, judd throws darts right handed, he also plays ping pong right handed.

This leads me to my theory that all people of our species are predominately right handed. some just end up doing things with their left hands.

I am right handed.....left eyed, right footed and find it easier and I am more accurate playing with the left hand using the rest.

Nope, brain scans show a difference between right handed and left handed (and ambidextrous).

"Unlike righties, who show strong left brain dominance, the hemispheres of ambidextrous and left-handed people’s brains are almost symmetric..."

I play snooker well with my left hand and not so well right handed. Just the occasional easy shot rather than getting the jigger. I always use the jigger with my left hand on the cue.

I can only write with my left hand. But I can play tennis/ping pong with either hand. I serve right handed and then can swap between my left/right hand during rallies. I can play darts (badly) with either hand.

My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
              I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

I'm predominately left handed, play pool/snooker left handed and still use my left hand for rest shots, can't play right handed at all, play tennis left handed or used to when I was younger anyway, I write with my left hand, hold my fork in my left hand when eating, yet play darts(badly) right handed and throw right handed, can't throw with my left yet I punch instinctively left handed, I also chalk my cue holding the chalk in my right hand. Us lefties are just weird lol

Dean Reynolds was another top left handed player who played right handed with the rest. Perrie Mans used it left handed I believe.

When I started playing snooker I was right handed but changed to being left handed as it felt more natural - but I still use the rest right handed.

I can't answer for all of them but, I know that Barry Hawkins and Mark Allen are actually right-handed. They write with their right hand. Snooker is the only thing they do left-handed as this was what felt natural to them when they first started to play. When it comes to using the rest however, they revert to using their right hand as they would normally. Hope that helps a little!

I´m playing, writing, throwing ect. lefthanded, so yes maybe that makes a difference. But I use my right foot playing football.

another anomaly is which hand do players chalk their cue with?

most right-handed players will swap the cue to their left hand and then hold the chalk in their right hand while they chalk the tip and then swap the cue back to their right hand ... most, but not all ...

I'm one of the "not all" ... I can only play right handed but I use the chalk with my left hand ... I write left handed but play all sports (and do nearly everything else) right handed ... scissors confuse me, I'm probably better left handed even though they are designed for right handed people ... football I can only kick with my left foot ...

                          weird innit
