  • Free ball rule question - ball adjacent to cush.

Player 1 fouls. The last red is now very close to the top cush midway between the pockets. The white cue ball has stopped near to the top right corner pocket.

The red left hand extreme edge can be hit but the opposite (180 degree) right hand extreme edge can not - due to the cushion.

Can the next player claim a free ball?

I have recently retired and started playing again but find i've become a little rusty on some of the rules.

    Thank you.

No. You can't be snookered by a cushion.

No, it is not a snooker. The rules specifically say that if the curved part of a cushion (the knuckle of the pocket) is closer than any obstructing ball then it is not a snooker.

17(e) The cue-ball cannot be snookered by a cushion. If the curved face of a cushion obstructs the cue-ball and is closer to the cue-ball than any obstructing ball not on, the cue-ball is not snookered.

So if say the last red (ball on) was behind the black ball both on the top cushion but the cue ball was in the jaw then it isn't a snooker because the cushion is closest to the cue ball? Or is it still a snooker because the cushion can't snooker but the black ball can snooker the red?
My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
        I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

It still would not be a freeball. Sure a cushion can't snooker. You have to consider what "object" ist closest to the cue-ball and is obstructing the path. In this case it's the cushion. A cushion can't snooker but still be in the way. In this scenario it's just bad luck. No freeball. My examiner used to say, when a player asks why it's not a freeball, tell them, that the white is not snookered. And as you can only get a freeball, when snookered, well... The white is obstructed by the curved part of the pocket/cushion. Big difference

So in this case, would you let your opponent shoot?

              That's probably the sensible choice!
