I also played an extremely friendly opponent before, who kept saying "good shot" on almost every single shot i played. even though i knew it was not that good, but i still received remark "good shot mate". Far too often

Me and my mate who play regularly say all sorts of trash talk on the table. Left an obscenely long pot with white tight on the cushion, 'happy christmas mate'. Fluked a snooker, 'years of practise' etc.... It's all good fun though. We don't mean anything by it and we both have a laugh.

When I'm playing someone else. I only congratulated them on good shots and give a heartfelt 'unlucky' on missed shots. I play the game in the spirit which it's meant to be played.

that's the way it should be played, what i don't accept is the muttering and suggestions of shot selection from others either team mates or spectators while i play. annoys me and makes me lose concentration.....ARRRRGGGGGGH

My mate and I are the exact same way. If I fluke a shot I'll go "and that's how you play that" with tongue in cheek, it's all in good fun. We will also tell each how easy the next one is -- so one will downplay it and one will talk it up. It's actually quite funny and all in good spirit.

When serious, I also make an effort to congratulate good shots (I actually can't help it) and don't give wise-a$$ comments on how missed shots "should have" been played.

I sometimes say "geez, I probably should have called that shot first" . . .

My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
              I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

We also sometime provide professional type running commentary done in a very sarcastic style.
In low hushed tones, "And as Joe 'four leaf clover' blogs come to the table...".
                  You get the idea.

my advice is if you get put off when someone says Merry Christmas before your first shot, then you need to go back and check your game... usually the people I play with will say "Game Over" when they miss and leave half a chance, or they'll say "If I lose this frame I'm going home" What I find offputting is when you're in the middle of the break, they would stop you and ask why you play this shot, why this, why that in the middle of break, I thought I told people enough times not to talk while someone is in the middle of the break at the table, respect and etiquette are quite rare at the club these days, there's so much cheating tactics that I see everyday you'll be surprised, I could write a book about it

                        ^^^

yes i also get that and hate it, when i play a colour and they will make a comment like "oh i thought you wouldve just played the ....... there"
some people just obviously play with no thought about position or break building and just think you should pot the easiest ball you can even if it means the break being over afterwards.

i also had a problem with a player in a league match who tried to call a foul on me for not nominating the black, i was on a break of a mere 16 and was quite clearly focusing on playing reds and blacks when he asked me to stop and then asked the referee about it saying i never nominated the black, even though positionally id be hard pressed to even see the other colours nevermind take them on, the ref said it was clear what i was going for and he wasnt calling a foul, after a couple of minutes of this going on i then got down and missed a pretty much straight red which id usually knock in every time, he knew if i carried the break on id be pretty much killing the frame off so he tried to stop my rhythm and break my concentration and it certainly worked.
i did however win the frame but it still really annoyed me.
i dont know why people cant just apprieciate playing the game without cheat tactics, luckily it doesnt happen all that often in our league, just the odd few who are obviously too desperate for a trophy on their mantle piece to just enjoy the game.

I hate it when my opponent smugly announces "ONE SCORED" in a loud voice. Thanks for that, I'm pretty sure I can add up to 1 and I don't need reminding I've just missed a black off the spot

I find it more irritating when your opponent rolls in a straight blue to the middle or black off the spot without a thought for position and some moron on his team shouts:

                              "Shot!"

As if it could have been missed.
