With Steve Davis meeting John Parrot at this years World Snooker finals, does anyone know how often they have met at Sheffield and overall what the head-to-head scores are?

Does anyone think a referee should be commentating on snooker rather than two 'experts' (John Virgo - READ A RULE BOOK!!!)?

I think it's going to be fantastic watching these two players (and fellow BBC commentators!) from the "old guard" play in Sheffield! I've never seen them in a match and hope it will be aired on Eurosport or the Beebs..
I have no doubt about who will win it. Davis is the one to bet on...but you never know...

One of them is the final in which Davis destroyed Parrot 18-3. The other one is then obviously a semi final in which logically Parrot would've beaten Davis 16-11.

Having a referee to commentate would be a great idea BUT it would have to be an ex referee! as apartof their contract with the WPBSA they connot comment on another referees decision or discuss a game to the level of remarking on decisions etc.

One of the best commentators is Clive Everton, and when I met him at The Welsh Open this year I was surprised at his knowledge of the game!! I mean if one of us needs a stat or figure we go either here or to Google, Clive didn't even have a laptop in the media center, he was the only one there with a pen and paper and he was even dictating his articles to his secritery over the telephone

I'm looking forward to this one almost as much as Ronnie vs Ding. Although Steve will be favourite for this match, they will probably both be glad they have drawn each other.

Steve is no longer the stongest member of the top 16 and Parrot would know he has a fair chance of winning. In contrast his chances of beating the likes of Robertson, Ebdon, O'Sullivan etc would be virtually nil.

For his part Steve will know that Parrot has been really struggling, apparently mostly with his confidence and attitude as his career declines. It doesnt seem to take more than 1 slight misfortune for Parrot to start shaking his head, and bemoaning how unlucky he is these days.

Hope it doesnt go like that. It would be better entertainment to see the more jovial side of Parrot managing to play well.

In my opinion, the commentator should be a bit of everything - a good player to explain spectators on choice of shots and the position on table; a referee to explain rules when needed; a bit of psychologist to understand what's going on in player's minds and also has to have a talent to keep those who listen interested in the commentary and the match as well. Why not a referee as a commentator, if he has such qualities?

A commentator should know enough about the game to not make a fool of himself/herself but the role of the expert is to really give the inside knowledge. The commentator should be leading the expert to the answer he thinks the public want to hear.

As for a referee as commentator, not sure. What I would do is have a referee on standby to be able to be called in at points where there is a question about a decision/particular situation. That way, you get the expert commentating on the frame itself, the referee when things get complicated and the commentator who seamlessly links everything together.

I offer my services to the BBC as the latter!!
