It is impossible to pot the blue from the break-off, as red is the ball on.

Wrong. In a Pot Black match featuring Rex Williams, he broke off, the cue ball hit the pack of reds, then clipped the blue into the centre pocket.

Yes I remember that. But he didn't POT it, he POCKETED it – that was my point!
