Am thinking of trying to set up a wee cash tournament at my British legion looking for sum comments of best way to try set this up if Some one has done it before

How many people do you think would play? If you've got 16 then a straight knockout tournament would be possible. Draw the names out of a hat and away you go! Trouble with that is first round losers go home early unless you have another competition for them. Need to decide if just a single frame "pot black" style or best of three.
If you've got only a handful of players, say 9, then maybe "round robin" where everyone plays each other would be best.
Some sort of handicap system would be a good idea to give everyone a fair chance.
You need to consider how long it will take to complete. The tournament at my club a couple of
Sundays ago finished at 3 in the morning! Not good if you've got work to go to.

That's a good start. If you get say, 8 folk, then you can do round robin. Everyone plays one frame against everyone. That means everyone plays 7 frames. At half an hour a frame that gives everyone 3.5 hours of snooker. Person who wins the most frames goes home with the dosh. If a tie then money split. Entry fee £5 plus whatever the lights cost.

Maybe my maths is wrong. Is this right?

The maths for a round robbin is n/2(n-1).
so for 8 players it would be 8/2*(8-1) = 28.

So 8 folks in round robbin means a total of 28 frames. Each player plays 7 frames.

            28 frames x 30 mins = 14 hours of snooker.

If you use 4 table then you'd get that down to 3.5 hours.

a round robin is were each player plays each other player once.
so with 8 players you will a total of
              28 matches.
now it is up to you if you have 1 or 2 or three frames per match.
              Up the TSF! :snooker:

Can play more if you want but would take a lot longer. Really depends on the standard of players you've got. I think half an hour a frame is a reasonable figure to work with. In my experience snooker tournaments tend to run at the pace of the slowest player competing. If you've got a grinder in there it ends up with everyone waiting around to play him. Even with a straight knockout a grinder will slow things down if he keeps winning his matches.

Spot on Cyberheater. Straight maths. Need to ensure there's sufficient tables or everyone ends up standing around waiting!

Haha andy a wouldn't do that. A think the only way to get better is to play better players and work for what you get

to them no exceptions. If you do have 2 tables try to run it over 1 day 2 max if you do a comp say over a month
playing on saturdays you will get alot of people not turning up or coming late
