  • Leaving a marker for getting out of snookers

    Hi
    When I chalk my cue I leave the chalk on the rail.
    I once left it by accident exactly where I needed to hit the cushion to get out of a snooker.
    This got be thinking; can you mark the cushion or bed with the chalk to assist you with your shots??

    Maybe one for the rules & stat guys
    Thanks

    sec 3 10.(d) seven points if the striker:
    (ii) uses any object to measure gaps or distance;

    ok, so making a mark is not exactly "measuring" but I would say that using an "object" to make the mark, would come under this rule.
    I would not like a player doing what you describe and maybe mention this first to not do so again.
    Interested if one of the regular Referees come on and expand...

    SRA guidelines state for this rule "This rules acknowledges the increased existence of gadgetry and seeks to preserve the game as one of visual judgement." So again does not actually cover your scenario.

      Sorry I dont intend to do this; it was just something I dont know the ruling on.
      Maybe it will come under un-sportsmanship

        sorry, I did not mean to come across as seeming to accuse you of wanting to do so
        Yes, maybe it would be better to put it under the conduct rule, and ungentlemanly conduct

              Yep, using an existing mark, chalk, finger, etc, is acceptable, refs do this all the time to remember where a ball was in case it needs replacing.

                Slightly different perspective from EPA rules ( World ) Pool = Interference , section 2 a and b , " referee will prevent any unauthorised marking of the table " , this applies to leaving a block of chalk ( or similar ) on any part of the table , it does not necessarily mean a foul BUT the referee will ensure it is removed . Under section 2 b , a repeat offender may be in breach of " the spirit of the game " and the referee can award the frame to his / her opponent . I know this refers to pool , but I cant see snooker missing a trick like this in their rules. It would be interesting to hear , as DeanH says ,what a qualified snooker referee would say on the matter.

                  when I was typing the previous post I was thinking of the exact same passage in the pool rules, now why don't WS include a phrase like in the pool "unauthorised marking" etc. into the above quote rule, would make things very clear; no marking, no using of anything to measure, etc., etc.
