free ball question

This actually happened a few weeks back with my m8's and it turns out you MUST hit the nominated ball. Found it in the rules somewhere.

12. Nominated Ball
(a) A nominated ball is the object ball which the striker declares, or indicates to the satisfaction of the referee, he undertakes to hit with the first impact of the cue-ball.

(b) It is a foul if the cue-ball should:
(i) fail to hit the nominated ball first, or first simultaneously with the ball on; or

so you are snookered on the reds from a foul take the green say as a free ball thin cut,miss it but cannon into the reds and fluke one,foul or no foul?

It is a foul, because you have failed to first hit the nominated (free) ball.
