  • Isn't it about time they ditched the brown?

My old man is colour blind, identifying the brown from a red is impossible for him and the blue and green likewise caused him problems when he used to play. Ebdom is the only pro I know of thats colour blind but it's far more widespread in general than amongst the pro circuit players of today. I'ts always amazed me why the colours were never changed so all can recognise them. Are the snooker heirarchy really so stuck in the mud with tradition?

Williams is also colour blind. You can ask the ref what colour the ball is that you're playing, so you can make sure you're not fouling.

I always had problems with brown-red with my old TV, it was impossible to tell them apart.... This was one of the reasons why I bought a new one.

2 of them then eh, that makes it about average then as they say 10% of men are colour blind.
When my dad told me of his snooker days he said he got through to a local final and was holding his own against a guy way way better than himself till he potted the brown thinking it was a red and bent down to take the black when the ref called foul. He was so embarrassed it played on his mind and he was thrashed from then on.

I reckon if during the worlds Ebdom or Williams were to ask the ref evey shot which was the brown the publicity that would follow on would make them change it.

Williams and Ebdon both keep an eye on the table so they know which one is the brown ball. They rarely have to ask, because they simply know from position where the brown ball is, and therefore, they know all the other ones are reds. :-)

              Hi Elvaago,

.........and interesting posts, and never realised both Williams and Ebbo were colour blind. And I for one, would never had been able to tell this by looking at their current play, they should be commended. One, for not letting the colour blindness hinder their play, and two, for not really making a fuss about it. Well done guys..

I disagree entirely. They should make a fuss about it and get it changed.
At their level of play the brown rarely gets in amongst the reds so they find it's no problem (assuming their disability is red/brown) but it is for many others. These two more so than any other players are in the position to make the od school take note and make the game moe user friendly for all. By just getting on with it is like you saying "I dont believe women should have the right to vote just because i'm a woman who does not bother to"

Maybe they should put numbers on the balls?

I disagree entirely about ditching the brown, just because someone is colour blind.

The rules quite clearly allow for this. If a player cannot distinguish between the brown and red, then he is quite entitled to ask the referee and the referee must answer him.

If he doesn't ask and commits a foul then thats his fault. I'm sure there are many colour blind players who play and have no difficulty.

Whats haggis got to do with this thread?

Fred Blogs is colour blind and cant tell a red from a brown. Thats a disabilty no doubt about it. To say Fred can play without any problem is simply stupid.

During a game he bends down to pot a red, he's certain it's a red. He takes his time lining up the shot and all able sighted around him can see he is about to commit a foul. The referee can see what's about to happen but like all referees he would be breaking the rules in speaking out. Even though all he'd be doing is aiding the disabled to play at an equal level.

Is that the great british sense of fair play at work ?

may as well put up a sign at the voting station...

oh yes, with a ps too. You cannot vote unless you are wearing shoes trousers, long sleeves and a tie. (Pay a quack for a letter though and we'll exempt the tie rule)

Snooker's a great game it's just run by idiots wearing their old school ties.
