tighten grip

Hello all.
I have noticed that in a lot of answers relating to cueing It is stated, "Do not tighten the grip till after cue contact".The wording may be slightly different in other comments but the meaning is the same.
My question since the cue ball has left the cue why grip the cue at all after the cue contact?.

Unless you want the cue to fly across the table. Happens to me from time to time because I've got a very loose grip and the cue slips through my hand on delivery.
