  • TopSpin Which type of shot is this?

In the match of 1982 when Alex Higgins took a break of 69 against Jimmy White, he plays a topspin shot for blue getting position for reds in the black area
I am really surprised as to how that shot can be played
Most of you might be knowing but still you can see it in this video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dViH2UERKBs
I am talking about the shot starting at time 2:44

Can someone please explain em what type of shot is that and how it can be played?
    Thanks

He is using left hand side, which makes the cue ball spin to the left off the cushion and back.. Well at least I think so....

I don't think it's top spin at all, looks like bottom-left to me (see the way it arcs back towards him before it hits the cushion). The side is the most important part of the shot though, creating the angle as Sam describes.

I agree with Robert602, the shot is played with plenty of bottom & left hand side... Alex makes it look funny tho with the way he jerks during & after the shot "still a joy to watch"

          Hi Nvedia,

............and what a great vid of Alex, thanks for sharing.

And agree really with Robert and Sam, and just wondering as well whether Alex may have used a cross between bottom left-hand side spin, and left-hand side top spin on this shot, but more bottom, if that makes sense.

And I always find side spin a little difficult to judge when playing, ok with hitting left centre of the cue-ball, but when I try to hit right-centre, a little bit tricky. And I only really use side spin in a game to help position the cue-ball, changing the angle the cue-ball bounces off the cushion after hitting the colour. One thing I've learnt as well is that side spin is not only just effective against cushions, but if you play the shot with a lot of side over a large distance too, the side spin can cause the cue-ball to swerve, although sometimes this is not very noticeable on the table.

And always enjoy playing top spin in games, usually to open up a game as well. I also find that raising your bridge hand too when playing this shot will steady your aim more, and allows for greater accuracy. By striking the cue-ball above centre, top spin will be added to the strength of the shot and will increase the distance that the ball travels.

............and hope this helps a bit Nvedia, and really great vid of Alex, enjoyed watching it..

          Lol...xx

              Thanks everyone
If its really a bottom left or deep screw shot why is it cue ball crosses the middle pocket(the line connecting middle pockets), touches the cushion and then come back

Anyways, is this the same type of shot?

in the original shot the forward path of the cueball would see it hit the cushion much further up towards baulk, but the bottom and side help to hold the ball and bring it back towards the player off of the cushion.

the link you have just posted isnt the same type of shot

No the "Bannana Shot" you just posted used top-right as it flew forward and to the right at fast altitude.

I agree low - left side, but wasnt the yellow on ? Nobody but the crazy Alex Hurricane Higgins would go for a shot like that in a world final.

Alex Higgins was champion in 1972 and 1982. This was from the amazing semifinal.

ps. the yellow is on. All other players in the world would go for that one or play safe.
