  • Rules for referees

    Hi all,
    last week I saw special edition of Snooker rules for referees. The rules were commented a there were a many described situation on the table. Does anybody of you have these version of Snooker rules?

    Thx a lot for answers

    This sounds like John Street's excellent book, the Snooker & Billiards Referees' Handbook. I would regard it as essential reading if you want in-depth explanation and illustrated examples of every aspect of the Rules.

    The Rules, as written, of course have to be written in the kind of language that brings to mind legal paraphernalia: they have to be written so that they cover, grammatically correctly, the position they are meant to be clarifying using as few words as possible. This does not always make easy reading and so the main points can often become confusing. (This is not a fault; it's just the way it is!)

    John Street's book takes every rule by itself and picks it to pieces, giving illustrated examples where necessary, and is a great aid to understanding not just what the Rules say but what they mean.

    I am not certain whether it is still in print, but I will give John a ring and find out.

        Just a slight word of caution. If you do get a copy, it is worth noting that since it's publication, World Snooker have added/amended a couple of Rules. These are not covered in John's book or in The Sussex Referees Association Book.
        The Rules are in Section 4 Rule 5(c) and Section 5 Rule 1(c).

            Section 4 Rule 5(c):
            A player shall not concede a frame in any match unless snookers are required. Any breach of this rule shall be regarded as Ungentlemanly Conduct by the player concerned.

            Section 5 Rule 1(c):
            If the referee has failed to notice any incident, he may at his discretion take the evidence of the marker or other officials or spectators best placed for the observation or may a view a camera/video recording of the incident to assist his decision.

                  Thank you, but I know where I can find rules. In the version I posted, there are further more detailed explanations of some points. I am looking for this rules with more commentaries.

                    Having had a look through these, I noticed something along the lines of:
                    "This is followed in the Rules by two Notes."

                    Well, that tells me that the Rulebook that it refers to is the pre-September 1995 version, which did indeed contain a number of 'notes'.

                    The revised Rulebook in September 1995 (which is current now apart from the two bits that DawRef noted above) has had all the notes removed and, where necessary, incorporated into the main text of the Rule.

                      This has condiserable implications if you rely on this version. For example, looking at page 9, paragraph 2 (that is the page 9 as printed on the page):

                      This gives the example of a player being fouled for the blue not being on the table. However, that Rule was changed for the September 1995 book and that would no longer be a foul as the player cannot now be penalised for the referee's failure to spot a ball.

                      There are, no doubt, other changes which will render your document (which is fascinating, by the way!) obsolete.
