Hi Guys, - Apologies for a semi-lengthy post.
Played a match this week against the current no.2 in our table. Our player played a first shot onto reds and the cue-ball went round the table and going in-off.
The Striker sees the in-off about to happen (dead center of the pocket) and places his hand at the back of the pocket and picks the cue-ball up as it was dropping, i.e. "leaving the bed of the table" (in rule speak).
Next I heard an emphatic cry of a foul 7.
I have just read through the rule book and can see no obvious mention about this situation. The closest I can get is:
Section 2, Rule 14 Forced off the table
A ball is forced off the table if it comes to rest other than on the bed of the table or in a pocket, or if it is picked up by the striker, whilst it is in play except as provided for in Section 3 Rule 14(h).
... here I think the "picked up by the striker" is the key wording.
and
Section 2, rule 9.a.ii In-hand
The cue-ball is in-hand when it has entered a pocket.
and
Section 3, rule 12 Penalties
All fouls will incur a penalty of four points unless a higher one is indicated in paragraph (a) to (d) below.
a.vi value of the ball on (red) by causing the cue-ball to enter a pocket
b.vii value of the ball on (red) or ball concerned, whichever is higher, by causing a ball to be forced off the table.
There is nothing the part (d) "A penalty of seven points is incurred if the striker" that matches.
I'm really curious as a different team from the same club got the exact same situation in a different division.
Are they trying it on ????
Cheers in advance.
