never really had that problem myself and I keep my chin down on the cue. I think in Davis's Successful Snooker book, when he talks about keeping his chin on the cue he mentions that he has a scar on his chin from contact with the cue.

I can't imagine what sort of stick I'd get if I turned up to my local league games with a plaster on my chin...

Mind you I've played in a few places where medical attention was needed after the game ....
