  • Two snooker questions

I have two snooker questions for someone to help me with.
    Question I,
I am snookered behind a colour and attempt a shot for a red. I attempt to hit a red but miss, but do not hit any other ball either. How many times can I be made to play this shot again from behind the colour? If I take my shot for a red and miss but leave a good clear shot on a red for my opponent, are they allowed to make me retake yet again or do they have to carry on from where the white now sits?
    Question II,
If a genuine attempt is made to get out of a snooker but it comes just short or passes within millimetres of the intended ball, is this classed as a hit?
I think not, but my opponent disagrees.
    Thanx

    Answer I:
You can be asked to retake it as many times as your opponent wants as long as a miss was called. If there's a clear red shot on then your opponent would be stupid not to take it on.

    Answer II:
If it passes within millimetres or just short then calling a miss would be harsh on an amateur like us! Although I usually play that it's a miss to get better at getting out of snookers.

Remember a miss CANNOT be called if the player who MADE the snooker is at the snookers required stage of the game.

I like to add that It's not always how close you get from escaping the snooker, Its also the position of the other balls. Its the referees discretion whether a "miss" is called.

Finally If you can Tie then a miss can still be called. Not if you need snookers as Matt stated.

When I play I agree beforehand if misses are going to be called because it's such a grey area in the amateur game and only causes arguements. Without the miss rule a deliberate foul always gives the opponent the chance to play or put you in again so it's not like the scenario occurs really often when it's an advantage to deliberately foul. Saying that, it can be annoying if you play a really good snooker and you only get 4 points for a poor attempt at escaping.

Umm that's exactly what I said.

If you can tie then you don't need snookers, so a miss CAN be called...

If you need snookers then a miss CAN'T be called.

So what is the rule if you hit both pink and black at the same time? anyone?

6 point foul or 7 point foul?

If you go for a red which is touching or virtually touching the black, if you hit them simultaneously you are deemed to hit the red first. As far as fouling goes, I don't know but I would say black - I cant see a reason for it being the pink

                I dunno either

If it actually hits the pink first obviously its a 6 point foul. But if the y hit at the same time then I guess its down to the referee's discretion again. Can anyone add to it?

removed this answer cos I hadn't read the other posts properly before opening my big mouth.

lets face it, no one knows. I'm the closest though

(for clarity: I meant that if you hit both pink and black and neither are the ball on, then I see no reason for the pink being deemed the ball hit first because that would mean choosing the option most beneficial to the player which shouldn't happen)
