  • Miss Rule query

If only the 6 colours are remaining on the table and a player is 23 points behind and commits a 4 point foul on the yellow leaving that player 27 points behind with 27 left on the table can the referee call a miss in this case?
Those who have been there and done that :snooker: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...oker_champions

The rules state (14 Foul and a miss):

The striker shall, to the best of his ability, endeavour to hit the ball on. If the referee considers the Rule infringed, he shall call FOUL AND A MISS unless only the Black remains on the table, or a situation exists where it is impossible to hit the ball on.

So in your case the referee could call a miss (unless - as the rules say - only the black remains on table or it is impossible to hit the ball on).

Yes. The referee should call 'foul and a miss', though. This is because the player behind can still win the frame with a re-spotted black.
You are only the best on the day you win.

macbeth you cannot call a miss if your opponent needs snookers.

yes being able to tie a frame means a player can win without the aid of a snooker.......so in that position the refaree can and most proberbly will call a miss...........

In the situation described in the opening post, the opponent does not need snookers. He is now 27 behind with 27 on and, as DawRef notes, can tie and then win with a respotted black.

Furthermore, in the case where a miss had been called from a previous shot where central, full-ball contact was available, then any further failure to hit the ball on from the same position will be called Foul and a Miss regardless of the difference in scores. Therefore, the position in the opening post could have been called for a second miss even if it resulted in the opponent being, say, 30 points ahead.
