  • What Would You Do?

    Tonight, my partner and I were playing our League Doubles Final (best of 5 frames match). We had to give our opponents 18 points start for each frame. We were 2 - 0 down, but only 2 points down in the third frame, with seven reds left.
    One of our opponents then had an angina attack and had to go to hospital, and the match was abandoned.
    So what happens to the match?
    We do not want to claim it (not sportsmanship).
    I see 3 options:
    1) Abandon the match altogether, with each player getting a trophy for being in the final;
    2) Sharing the trophy for 6 months each, again with each player getting a trophy;
    3) Re starting the match with us being 2 - 0 down, but only giving our opponents a 2 point lead in the 3rd frame.
    I would think the other players wouldn't want to concede their 2 frame advantage either.
    (It was suggested that the third frame be re-started with the scores as they were, but only with the 7 reds).
    One final thing, the match has to be played before our presentation evening which is in May (date TBC). It also depends if the other player recovers and is well enough to play.
    I have not heard or come across this situation before.
    You are only the best on the day you win.

    I would say it depends on whether you class it as a match abandonment or match forfeited.

    If a player cannot continue the match then it should be conceded, for they did not beat you. Otherwise somebody could theoretically win the first two frames of a best of 9, collapse and then claim the match. It wouldn't work like that.

    However the ball is in your court. If you do not wish to win this way (which is understandable) then I would say that you start at 2-1 with the team conceding just the frma ethey had to leave during as anything else is too hard to work out unless you have an exact layout of each ball at teh time of angina with you.)

    Basically you technically have every right to claim the match as they were the ones who withdrew. However you could make the gesture taht if the team can make it back to the final before the deadline, then you could resume with the scores 2-1.

      You definitely win the macth officially as chasmmi says.

      They have to concede if they cannot continue.

      However! I would suggest you start the match again from scratch when the gentleman has recovered suffiently.
      That is fair.

        Just to update you all, the player in question suffered a heart attack on his way to hospital. When he got there, he had to have an operation. He is now back home, but has been told to rest up for 4 weeks.
        From what I have heard, we will probably share the trophy, each having it for six months.
        I think that in the circumstances, that is the fairest decision.
