  • 3/4 Spit cues vs 50/50 split cues

I have been resently looking at different cues on the internet and im wonder wat is the difference in performance between a 3/4 split cue and a 50/50 split cue? Is one better than the other?

One isn't better than the other, but most prefer 3/4 or one piece. The '50/50 split' has quite a forward balance, and the joint can creep in to your eye line.

I'd say if carrying a longer case around isn't a problem then go for a 3/4 or a 1 piece. If you can, try out some different cues before you make your choice.

Interestingly i prefer 1 piece over 1/2 or 3/4. But of the remaining 2 i dont like 3/4 joint cues much at all, i find them in general poorly balanced unless made by the very best cue makers.

I also prefer a 1 piece and I won't buy anything else, second choice would be a 3/4, and I wouldn't bother with a 2 piece, but it's all personal preference.

Only problem with having a 1 piece is that it might be a bit light for some, unless weight is added to the butt of the cue which some wouldn't like because they may find it off balance.

no difference in a well made one play wise, but split cues are easier to transport.

Where should the balance point be on a cue? Especially for a beginner player?

Sorry didn't realise. I saw it in the list of similar threads to the one I was in and it sounded interesting. I'll shut up now

No worries, balance point is a personal thing, but majority of decent cues will be fine as they come, personally I prefer forward weighted at around 17 1/2"

Earlier, in most clubs and even professional prefers one piece cue stick. But these cues are little difficult to transport and carry along. So came the trend of 2 piece. I personally prefer 2 piece as it is easy to put in the case and take along.

Now choice of the 1/2 or 3/4 is a personal view but IMO, 3/4 is better than the 1/2. Firstly, the joint in the middle can be a little distraction when you are habitual of putting your chin on the stick. Secondly, and I have observed it myself, while using 1/2 stick, the joint even brushes with your chin in many shots and can cause dis-comfort. If you don't have any problem wearing a Band-Aid on your chin like Graeme Dott used to do then you are fine with both
