  • Maximum Men Making The Final

Apart from this year are there any instances where a player has made a 147 and then gone on to the world final or even won it. As far as I know there isn't as and it seems there is a 'cloud 9' effect when someone makes a 147 and then doesn't progress after that. I was surprised to see both maximum men make the final this year.

If I remember rightly Jimmy White made 1992 a maximum in his first round match and then gone into the final. And Hendry did the same and even won the final 1995.

Yes, Hendry's 1995 world championship created the biggest single payday at Crucible and therefore – I suspect – in snooker history. He got £147,000 for the maximum, £16,000 for the highest break and £190,000 for the title.

O'Sullivan would have superseded this this year but for Carter equalling his maximum.

Thorburn reached the final in 1983, by the way!

it was a surprise given that players who make 147s in tournaments seem to be "a lot of the time" losing either that match or the next.

maybe we just seem to remember those who go out early afterwards more as its fresh in the memory? pass. it does seem to be mentioned in commentary too to happen a lot

8 Nov 2007 Ronnie O’Sullivan vs Ali Carter Northern Ireland Trophy Waterfront Hall - ROS lost in next match
15 Dec 2007 Ronnie O’Sullivan vs Mark Selby UK Championship Telford International Centre - ROS won the final

Of the 7 maxis made in telivision stages in 2007 and 2008, 6 times the maximum man made it to the final of the event and 3 times he won it!

although the opening post mentions the WC i was posting generally when i specified "tournaments".

Moniques post seems to point that theres a trend lately of it being more regular for a player to progress

Obviously there is a difference in that the vast majority the last few seasons have been in the final stages; so it is more likely than if there are a number in the qualifiers – meaning players are less likely to progress to the final, in terms of standard and straightforward mathematics.
