I couldnt find a thread for s but then maybe i didnt look close enough but anyway, i was just wondering what you all do to get in the 'zone' and find that 'winning metality' as for me it just kinda seems to happen from time to time where i just seem to feel like i aint gonna miss much and i just start to buzz

i thought this may be an interesting thread as i suppoose we all have different ways to get in that 'zone'
    just do it :snooker:

Simple answer is, I don't get into any zone, because I am rubbish and each miss galls me all the more

But had I got the skill and time, I would psyche myself up by absolute concentration and each pot would make me more of a threat

It is a shame that when you are a useless player, this mentality seems to work against you instead

I try and blank everything that is going on around me and put all my effort and concentration on what's going on the table. Sounds simple but i still find it difficult espeically in a busy club where i play where there are plenty of distractions!

Be in the present. I think we may all be surprised when we arn't actually in the present!

When eating your dinner - Eat your dinner
        When walking - Walk
When talking with friends - Talk with friends

That doesn't mean you can't think about the future, but be in the present and don't let your mind wander. Thinking about the future or past and letting your mind wander is snooker suicide!

There was a story about James Wattana, in the 1990s we was in front in a semi final of a tournament against Jimmy White, he was in front and he thought he will win (letting his mind wander), he was thinking about what he would buy with the prize money and he thought of a very nice house for his mother that he saw in Thailand (he told us all this in an interview). He had a deep desire to buy this house. He missed an easy looking shot, and Jimmy White went into his break making mode. James was then worrying about losing a house he never actually owned. There was a lot of money in this tournament and James could have won it.

Sometimes your mind can be in another venue, in another country, continent or even another planet! It needs to be not only in the match arena but inside the cushions on the table! To be able to concentrate on the right things at the right time AND relax is a tough skill to learn, it can be learnt though.

I think he lost the match.

This is more of a pyschology (Did I spell it right?!) question but I hope what I put here will help you.

As you develop your skills in break building, not only will you be able to make the balls and actually score it, you will be able to concentrate for that amount of time and not lose concentration during a break. The concentration for the whole break is a vital skill.

Think about how Cliff Thorburn kept his concentration for a whole 15 minutes during his 147 at the world's in the 1980s. This was intense concentration.

Read "the inner game of golf"!!

Someone else recommended it on here and I wholeheartedly agree. It cover a lot of this psychology and provides exercises for you to run through whilst playing that improve your concentration.

And...... when you're playing snooker you're playing snooker. Sounds simple!

I try to do the same thing I do when I am practicing, not trying to make it any more special than what it actually it.

Dont rush your shot, but dont take too long, just play the game you normally would. Getting into the zone is getting into your natural rhythm, which means you shoudl try to be normal and play it at your normal speed.

                    I think bongo is correct.
Here is a link to a brief article about "mushin" ("no-mind") as applied to golf.
