  • Highest break in a losing frame

Does anyone know what is the highest break made by a player who lost the frame ? Let us restrict it to pro matches.

In the same vein what is the highest score on the losing side of a frame ?

Just wanted to know what it takes to have "history" on my side ..

The highest break at the Crucible in a losing frame is 73, by Matthew Stevens against Peter Ebdon and by Jimmy White against Steve Davis. In both cases it was frame 16 of a semi-final.

Joe Davis made a 76 break in the WOrld Championship of 1937 only to win the frame on a re-spotted black. This was frame 30 of the semi-final against Sidney Smith.

The record frame-losing score I think is the second half of a 93-92 scoreline many years ago. Can't remember off hand who the players were, but possibly Graham Cripsey was one?

In the 2000 World qualifiers, Rod Lawler v. Kristjan Halgason, Helgason managed to get four snookers in levelling the scores at 85-85 before adding the re-spotted black giving Lawler 85 points in a frame he lost.

When Nick Dyson made his 147 at Bournemouth in the UK, he finished the match off on a re-spotted black at 81-81.

      Bravo Statman

How do you dig up all this, Statman ! What is your secret ?

A 73 break needs atleast 10 reds leaving a max of 67 on the table. Two snookers and a clearance with all blacks needed. Amazed why Peter and Steve even bothered continuing

I think most would have given up the frame at that point considering that the match was only halfway through.

Do you remember which year this was ( what a stupid q, course you do ) ? Would like to search for it on YouTube.

See my Crucible Stats section here:

You'll need to look under 'points' or 'miscellaneous', can't remember which!

Didm't Thorburn win a professional frame from 70-something points behind at some stage?

Statman, can i ask where you get your facts from? are they off the top off your head or do you look them up? if they are off the top of your head its very impressive and you should fill your Mastermind boots.

Well, I have full frame scores and eventually managed to make them computerised - so then it was a simple matter to just search for various things like this.

But, as soon as I got them computerised, they left their permanent home in my head so I have to look them up!

Incidentally, my Stats section is updated regularly, such as the ranking tournaments section which I have just updated after the Shanghai Masters.

Are you sure you aren't a computer yourself ?

From memory, he was 74-0 down to Jimmy White with 59 on the table, and won the frame. Possibly in the Goya Matchroom Trophy final that he won.

I have vague memories of a commentator once saying that Cliff Thorburn had won a frame in which he needed 7 snookers...

There was a thread last year at Global Cue Sports Forum (http://globalcuesportscentre.com/yab...num=1178705040) discussing a frame where Neal Foulds apparently made an 80 break but lost the frame to Willie Thorne.

I think that was John Spencer; not Thorburn. I have seen the frame in question and it is a remarkable combination of bad luck (unluckily going round the back of a red when it was only a few inches from the side cushion – and leaving a free ball afterwards) and slight sloppiness from White, along with a good clearance from Spencer.

When White missed on 74 and Spencer came to the table, John Pulman, in the commentary box, said something like "I'm sure Spencer isn't coming to the table with any thoughts of winning the frame – just trying to get a bit of practice and rhythm."
