Well I use www.nationalrail.co.uk Journey planner... http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jp
If I understand it right, the cheapest tickets are when you buy them well in advance!

I didn't know that buying train tickets involved so much research and comparison I am too used to state owned train companies it seems, so
I would have just bought the ticket upon arrival.
Good I read this thread before.... will safe me money I guess. The trip from Manchester shouldn't be too long though.Ein jedes Werkzeug ist ein Tand in eines tumben Toren Hand.

Its worthwile booking online beforehand. And the site AM mentioned is the best one to book. I also noticed booking too early can generate higher prices. Normally 2 or 3 weeks in advance gives you the cheapest option. So, check out regularly.
I booked a ticket from Manchester to London for 12.50. Buying it on the train was a whapping 112.00 pounds!

Yes i'd definately advise anyone to book their train tickets well in advance for a (reasonably) long journey (in miles anyway) like London to Sheffield.
I always go on nationalrail.co.uk for my enquiries and its usually cheaper to buy two single journey tickets rather than a return ticket.
National rail sell tickets upto 12 weeks in advance and ive usually found the best deals around 10 weeks in advance. They must drop the price a bit if tickets dont sell well immediately.
I'm off to Stoke-on-Trent next weekend from London for £7.50 each way! I dont know how i managed that as i usually have to pay between £35 and £52 for that trip! Happy days!I Love Snook!

Yeah, well half of the Bundesbahn tally of trains are at a standstill due to mechanical failures.
You just chose your train on one of the websites mentioned here and pick any company to buy them. I am registered with Virgin (Branson is a friend of mine) and Great Western

Last year I tried to book tickets online (trainline, nationalrail...). But they told me, that it's no longer possible for non-UK-residents to order tickets online. Are there other chances to buy tickets in advance (and maybe save some money) ? Thanks.
