  • Buying a handmade cue?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm in the market for a new snooker cue and been scanning the Internet and I've come up with a few names John Parris, Mike Wooldridge, Trevor White, Craftmans, Dunns, Mastercue ect. I'm wanting to spend no more than £300 and was wondering if there's someone who could give me some advice on buying a hand made cue and if there's any other cue makes to point out. I'm after a 3/4 split, 57" length, about 18oz weight, 9mm tip. Ive been looking at the Mike Wooldridge Shark Series,

    Hi,

    Have a read of the cues section on Mike Wooldridge site that will tell you everything you need to know.

    If you have £300 to spend I would go with 1 of the following:

    * Trevor White
    * Mike Wooldridge
    * Robin Cook
    * Dave coutts

    John Parris can be a bit hit and miss and if you want his best work you have to buy an ultimate at minimum of about £400, the above cue makers provide their best work as standard.
    Just because its old, doesn't mean its worth a fortune!!

      i would go for wooldridge or white ,,,, they only make quality cues ,,the cue spec you are after is near standard spec so there are plenty of second hand ones around made by wooldridge and white ,adr147 on this forum deals in cues he will sort you a good deal ,even if he is scottish !!!!!!!!!!

        how tall are you?

        i believe 57" is too short for anyone, ok in the balls but not for long potting.

                  There is nothing specific that you 'should' be using.

                  You should be using exactly what YOU feel best with, unless that's something completely out of the ordinary and bizarre.

                  If you have had enough experience playing to know you get on well with 57", then at 5' 11" tall, I'd say 57" is just fine for you.

                  At the end of the day, it kind of depends on your own experiences, which if limited, will mean you are at the mercy of many many opinions, some good, some not so good.

                  When you have more experience of trying and playing with various cues, made to varying dimensions and tolerances, then you may find that you have a particular taste in a cue. But until then, somewhere within the usual spec margins is probably going to do you just fine.

                    57" or 58" doesn't make a blind bit of difference as to whether you can pot long balls or not.

                    you're preference is for longer than 57", that's your prerogative.

                    but 99% of players would benefit from using a shorter cue cos you get far more control and 'touch' from a compact cue. and compact cue action.

                    anyone who can't pot long balls with a 'shorter' cue has a bad cue action, not a cue that is too short.

                    anyway, my standard snooker cues are 58" cos that's what most people ask for. doesn't make it 'right' though.

                    best cue i ever used was 54" and i could pot them off the lightshades, long or short.

                    so can anyone if they cue the ball right.

                    my general advice is, and always has been, 57"-58" is a good size. you can't go wrong with it.

                    but if you like extra long or extra short, go for it. as long as you cue the ball well, it won't affect your game.
