Hi i have just been speaking to a referee pro standard , and he has told me that the reason why the pro's are allways complaining about the break off shot on tv , [ especially Davies ] is because the rack is set loose ,ie they are either by fault or design not set tight , he winked and said the latter as to make it better for tv . there is a culprit ie a ref on tv who is the worst , and they are also the worst for guaranteeing that when the said person cleans the cue ball ,you can guarentee there will be a kick almost immediatly after ,as the person in question rubs it ,rather than caressing the ball so as not to attract static . thats what i have been told . shoot .

I respect your source and yourself but I cant see that a referee (ie michaela tabb, eiran williams or jan ver haas) would do such a thing? I cant see it happening to be totally honest.Always play snooker with a smile on your face...You never know when you'll pot your last ball.

Reply to rocketboy .
With superfast cloths , and a loose rack , it is almost impossible for a PRO on tv to produce a satisfactory break . [ WHICH SHOULD NOT BE THE CASE ] Even hendry was hitting the pack thin and hard yesterday . Its so they dont get scrappy frames or just the ref , who i have been told to watch in particular simply does not follow the correct procedure .

When a REF racks the balls he always tightens them up by putting his finger's in at the base of the triangle and pushes them toward's the apex, this tightens the pack,it also allow's the REF to lift the triangle of the table without disturbing the pack, because if the REF did'nt do this the triangle would not lift cleanly of the pack and would leave the reds very loose which would be noticable to anyone at the table. You should try and rack the reds as an experiment yourself without tighting them and see how hard it would be to lift the triangle. As for cleaning the white I'am sure that the ref cleaning any BALL use's as much pressure as he deems necessary depending on the mark on the ball. And to the ref of pro standard who told you this ,not much of a pro if what he says is true it is to the W.S.A he should be telling this to.....

He is in the process of reporting his obsevations , especially the excessive cleaning of the white . I will not obviously name this person but look at all the refs at the masters when cleaning ,[ and it is one currrently there] and watch that ref clean the white you will see . The rack is just sloppy ness but i feel with a motive as stated .

You must also remember that all of the red balls are not equal, they will vary in weight and diameter by a fraction (Section 1, Rule 2 (a) & (b)). To make them all the same weight and size exactly, would be a prohibitive cost. Therefore, when the balls are re-set (to be exact, re-rack is in the inferior, IMHO, pool), the reds will not be set as they were in the previous frame. Also, when breaking off, the cue-ball may hit one red slightly harder or in a different place to before, causing the reds to break differently each time.
Section 3, Rule 2(a)(i) states, 'the reds in the form of a tightly-packed equilateral triangle, with the Red at the apex standingon the centre line of the table, above the pyramid Spot, such that it will be as close to the pink without touching it, and the base of the trianglenearest to, and parallel with, the top cushion'.
All referees will set the balls to this rule. You are only the best on the day you win.

I am sure in the past the triangle might have been set up stightly off-straight but that is virtually impossible today.

what a load of garbage, I know many of the refs and to be honest they would never disclose anything about one of their fellow colleagues, especially to someone who could spout such things in public as you have done here. They wouldn't risk their reputation for starters and what has he got to gain by telling you this!

I dont believe that racking the balls a bit loose would affect whether a frame went scrappy or not. Surely the better the break off the less likely the frame is to go scrappy (because the opponent will have a very difficult safety shot with a high chance of leaving you in), dont buy it at all

It wouldn't, in actual fact the balls wouldn't open up so much so it couldn't really affect the frame. Its one shot, the balls always go into a random area so its not like pool where players need the rack to be tight to help spread the balls.
As for the cleaning of the white ball, I really fail to see how a certain way of rubbing the ball can create a kick. Again kicks are too random to predict, if there was more chance of a kick after cleaning the players wouldn't ask for it to be cleaned full stop.
