  • Total Clearance

Everyone knows that a maximum is 147 and, with a free ball, that can be extended to 155. However, it is possible to get a 160 total clearance. Obviously there is no foul ( except the first foul to get the free ball), so how is it done?
A clue is that a mistake is made by the referee (not a miscount of the break) which is not noticed by either the striker or his opponent until later in the break.
As with all odd scenarios, it may never happen and probably never happen. But it is still possible.
The answer is in the rules. Have fun.

If you mean a wrongly respotted red, some say it would even lead to more than 160 (but to be realistic you would need a referee affected by daltonism and two very distracted players):

You are more-or-less correct. Another clue is the extra 5 points to make it 160.
The answer is about wrongly spotting a ball.
Before a ball is potted, player A commits a foul. Player B is awarded a free ball. He takes a colour as his red then the black and proceeds to pot red black in sequence. However, during his break, he runs out of position and takes the brown as his colour. The referee instead of respotting the brown, re spots a red. Neither player notices his mistake. Player B continues to pot red then black and then notices that the brown is not on the table. Unfortunately, the rogue red had been moved off of the spot it was placed on. The referee does not know which red it was and therefore play must continue with the "17th" red. Player B then clears with blacks with the remaining reds, and then the colours, making a total clearance of 160.
