Answer to Round 171 - 171 Hugs at the Dancing Chimpanzee Tango Party
Congratulations to snookersfun and Monique for solving round 171.
Answer below, in hidden text - select it to read...
(
Answer is 90. Here is why....
First: the number of chimps at the party. To give 171 hugs, there must be 19 chimps. Each of the 19 chimps hugs the 18 other chimps, and each hug is between 2 chimps... this gives 19 x 18 / 2 = 171 hugs.
Second: find the greatest number of possible dances. Let's split the chimps into two groups. Call one group Boys and the other group Girls. Let each Boy dance with each Girl. This won't cause any problems because every Boy dances only with Girls and not with other Boys, so when a Boy meets a Girl he knows she won't have danced with any other Girl chimp with whom he had danced. And vice versa.
Boys + Girls = 19
Number of Dances = Boys x Girls. This will be greatest when the split between Boys and Girls is as even as possible - i.e. 9 of one and 10 of the other.
So we get, maximum number of tangos is 9 x 10 = 90 dances
PS The Boys don't really have to be males; nor the Girls females. Just, naming the groups this way hopefully makes it easier to see the answer. As long as we split the chimps into a group of 9 and one of 10, it doesn't matter what we call them. Could have Blondes and Brunettes...

Round 172 - Shrunken basketballs
Take 9 basketballs shrunk to the size of ping pong balls and position them wherever you want on the bed of a snooker table enlarged to the size of a football pitch.
For any line of 3 basketballs shrunk to the size of ping pong balls in ANY direction, score 3 points.
For any line of 4 basketballs in ANY direction, score 6 points.
For any line of 5 or more basketballs in ANY direction, score 9 points.
Only the longest line counts. For example, a line of 9 balls in a line OOOOOOOOO scores 9 points (as it has 5 or more balls) - you cannot also count lines of 4 balls or 3 balls within that same line!
Post here whatever scores you can find - preferably as high as possible!
You don't have to find the highest theoretically possible - in fact, I don't know what it is!"If anybody can knock these three balls in, this man can."

27 is pretty good. Think I have found higher though, so keep the bids coming in. It' s OK if they're lower than bids already posted.
And to answer the question I was asked by pager... no, the line can't be curved! To score points, the balls must be in a straight line!"If anybody can knock these three balls in, this man can."

snookersfun has also found a 27.
To make sure everyone understands the scoring, here was the first answer of 24 from semih:
OOO
OOO
OOO
which has 8 lines of 3"If anybody can knock these three balls in, this man can."
