Haha! Nice answer, but no, the final session had not just started. In fact, it was late. Again, there is a definite reason, from the information given, why Hendry could not possibly win the title by potting that pink...

Another very nice answer, from abextra! But, again, not the one! (Actually, far better than mine - I think I'll give it half a point just for that!)

Hendry misses the red completely at his first attempt...
...but hits the black and drops it in. 7 points to Davis, score is 67 - 48.

The red drops in! Unbelievable! Hendry has finished perfectly on the blue. In goes the blue, then yellow and an easy green.
Hendry continues, potting brown and blue, before missing the pink
Score is now 67 -68, Hendry pots the pink to make it 67 - 74, but misses the final black and leaves it on. Davis pots the final black and the respotted black and becomes eight-time Champion. What a man!

Nice ending, footygirl. Better than mine, in fact, but unfortunately not the one.

Hendry doesn't go in off. He pots the pink. A pot means it is a legal shot - it can't be a foul...

But goes in off the pink to give Steve six penalty points, to make the score 66-69. Davis plays a clever safety and leaves the pink and white at either end of the table. Hendry doesn't know how he went in off and bungles the safety leaving the pink close to the centre pocket. Steve can't believe his luck steps in and pots the pink for 72-69 and gets down to play the black. He hits it with power, the black wobbles in the jaws of the pocket, shoots across the bottom cushion and drops in. Steve raises his arms and turns away with tears in his eyes. Hendry congratulates him, SD is world champion for the 9th time in his life

ROUND ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE

Stephen Hendry is siting in his chair, while defending World Champion Steve Davis walks to the table, ready to break off. I sit about eleven rows back, watching, expectantly, knowing that I am about to witness what will be the final frame of this bank holiday Monday, 4 May, 2009, in the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, England. The final night of the Final of The 888.com World Professional Snooker Championship. I know that it is all about what happens in these next few minutes – is Davis about to win it and take his 8th World Title? As Dennis Taylor says through my earpiece, “It doesn’t get any bigger than this.” And, as he continues. “This knowledgeable Crucible crowd know that.”

“King of the ‘80s” says Everton, “against King of the 90s, and tonight one of them is going to finish as King of the end of the Noughties. The other will leave this arena still a seven-time World Champion and a disappointed man.”

And so the frame gets underway. Hendry makes the first error, and Davis, slowly but surely, begins to compile what increasingly looks like it could be the title-winning break. As I sit watching, I start thinking back over the highlights of the four sessions of this Final, which are now approaching their conclusion. I remember the three snookers that Davis obtained in frame 8, then to win on a respotted black, which meant that he finished the session 2-6 instead of 1-7 down, sparking his recovery which continued in the following session last night. I think back to Hendry’s 3 consecutive centuries in frames 19 to 21, to Davis’s spectacular 147 maximum - his first ever at the Crucible -straight from Hendry’s break off in frame 15, and to Hendry’s wisecrack when referee Michaela Tabb announced “touching both balls” in the first frame after the mid-session interval in this afternoon’s afternoon session. But this frame, now, is what counts!

I am now aware that Davis, now 60 points in front, just needs red, black, red, to take the title, barring snookers. But, he misses the red! And leaves it on. Hendry comes to the table, 6 of the seven remaining reds in pottable positions. Hendry pots all 6 of them, with blacks, and is then faced with a tricky final red down the cushion. He takes it on – it wobbles in the jaws! .. and finishes just safe. Finally, after a safety battle of 5 shots each, Davis wins the safety battle and leaves Hendry snookered. It’s not tough to hit but, as we all know, it’s not about hitting it, but getting it safe. And that isn’t easy!

Hendry misses the red completely at his first attempt, and Michaela Tabb, upon Davis’s nod, replaces the white. Attempt number two for Hendry. This time, he hits the red full ball…. it flicks off the green… where is it going? Towards the middle pocket, at an acute angle. The red drops in! Unbelievable! Hendry has finished perfectly on the blue. In goes the blue, then yellow and an easy green.

Hendry continues, potting brown and blue, before missing the pink! It leaves a long, very tough pot. Will Davis take it on? He looks at it, long and hard… Davis gets down, plays the pink – again, it rattles in the jaws, and then rolls across, near the opposite corner. Hendry comes to the table, pots the pink….

Who wins the 2009 World Professional Snooker Championship, to become eight-time Champion, and why?

John Parrott and Steve Newbury can't be Namechums - they have different first names! And the same goes for Steve Davis and John Campbell.

Oh, of course I shall give you that. One pair of Namechums is Steve Davis and Steve Newbury; the other pair is John Parrott and John Campbell. So, congratulations dantuck_7!

When Steve Davis won the World Title in 1987, he beat the player who beat the player who beat the player who beat the player who beat John Campbell in the first round at the Crucible - so Davis and Campbell are opposites.

And likewise, when John Parrott won the World Title in 1991, he beat the player who beat the player who beat the player who beat the player who beat Steve Newbury in the first round at the Crucible - so Parrott and Newbury are opposites.

ROUND ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TWO.

I call two snooker players Namechums if:

    - they have the same first name; and
    - they have, at some time, been "opposites" (as per round 181) of two other Namechums.

Therefore, each pair of Namechums has an associated opposite pair of Namechums. For example: if Mickey Spillane is opposite of Papa Doc, and another year Mickey Mouse is opposite of Papa Smurf, then Mickey Spillane and Mickey Mouse are Namechums; and Papa Doc and Papa Smurf are also Namechums. (Or would be, if these were all snooker players.)

    Name two pairs of Namechums.

Congratulations Lindea! Each year, the pair of opposites consists of the World Champion and the person who lost (in the first round at the Crucible) to the person who lost to the person who lost to the person who lost to the person who lost to the champion.

Francisco was Davis' opposite in 88 because Davis won that year and his opposite is then the one who you'll come to if you go back "the losers way". Which means you take Griffiths which Davis beat in the final and see who he beat in the semis(White) then the one White beat in the Quarters (Knowles) and then who Knowles beat in the 2nd round(Charlton) and then Davis' opposit is the one Knowles beat in the first round (Francisco).
    (hope that makes sense )
