That two players in the top 16 who are ranked beside each other (like 4 & 5, 7 & 8, 10 & 11 etc.) meet in a match?
-
It is something that cannot possibly happen in the last 32.
It can happen in the last 16, but very rarely does (I think 2005 is the only year it happened).
It is more likely to happen in the quarters – and often does.
It is extremely likely to occur in the semis – and usually does.
It is bound to happen in the final, technically, although a statistician would probably disregard the final as a triviality.

Guest repliedoh, I think I misread your question anyway, so.... I think I'll never score a point here, unless you do the funny anagrams again.

I am referring to the second round at the Crucible. The reason I referred to it as the last 16 in my second sentence is that, in 1977-79 there was one round fewer, and therefore the Last 16 was technically the first round, although the quarter-finals came immediately after.

Guest repliedWas it that one match in round two has been played over three sessions for whatever reason?
That is, if you are referring to the second round of the tournament (qualifying stages) and not the second round of the Crucible (which is what you wrote in the question), but then the second round of the Crucible would be the Last 16, which confused me at first, lol.

You may be correct Lindea, but this has happened a few times before and also in this years WC, therefore not sure if its classed that unusual ?
2 that spring to mind are Ebdon/Gray this year and I remember White beating Darren Morgan 13-3 while back.

Sorry Robert, I misread your earlier post. I thought you said McCulloch was the last to leave, rather than the one before last.
In any case you have now submitted an answer and it is indeed the corrrect one.
So congratulations Robert.

ROUND FIFTY-FIVE
What was unusual about the second round of the Crucible in 2005? The last 16 is the earliest round in which it could happen, but it is 2005 in which it actually did happen in the second round.

I was thinking that all of them have a career high ranking of 17. Ali Carter would've been the last to leave (he improved on it this season), and I thought Ian McCulloch before him (Clark, Wilson, Parrott, Francisco before that), but maybe not.
If I could revise my dodgy counting of last night, it looks like there were 5 in the group in 04/05, and 10 in total are or have been 'members'.

No correct answers yet, although, Robert, I think you might be on the right lines (though Ian McCulloch is incorrect).

I will guess that their age is also their world ranking.
Last person: Joe Johnson?
everthing here is a complete guess.

Would I be right in saying that 11 players have been members of this group at one time or another (no more than 4 at any one time), and that the one before the last to leave it was Ian McCulloch?
If so, is it considered unsporting to use a database query in obtaining the answer?
(I'm up late thinking about snooker again :/ )

ROUND FIFTY-THREE
What do the following players have in common: Ryan Day, Andy Hicks, Marcus Owen and Jim Wych?
There are currently no other players who belong to this group.
And also, who was the last player to also belong to this group, who no longer does?

Congratulations Lindea. John Higgins made a 143 and a 139 against John Parrott in 1998. The first player to make two 130+ breaks in one Crucible match was Dennis Taylor in 1981; it didn't happen again till 1991 (Parrott), and not again until 1996 (Ebdon). Maybe surprisingly Hendry appears only once on the list, while John Higgins has managed it five times.
