I was thinking of 1995 when Alan McManus beat him 10-3 so this question is withdrawn.

John Higgins has only lost once in the first round of the world championship.
Who was he beaten by and what was the score (2 points up for grabs)

Mark Selby beat him 10-4 in 2006. Aside from losing the final, Mark Selby has a very good record against John Higgins recently.
Interestingly, the last four world champions have in the previous year prior to winning not got past the first round, with Shaun Murphy not qualifying the year before he won.
