    ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN

Which player missed a maximum on the final black in a tournament this season, using the rest. Pro tournament of course.

    Name player and tournament.

    Round 216:

Free ball 8 extra points, make a 72 after that. Opponent free ball 5 points, make a 75 after that. Score then 80-80. Respot. In short, a break of 80 including a free ball.

Probably completely wrong but it's too late for my intoxicated brain.
Higher is possible (and the above does not allow in the score for the points for the fouls).

As ever, unless otherwise stated, you can assume that this is a normal game of snooker, with scores at 0-0 at the start, with no refereeing errors.
The first person to give an answer which matches my highest will get the point – or the first person to give an answer that beats mine as long as it stands up to rigorous scrutiny!

(Apologies to The Statman for any wording plagiarism.)

Congratulations, kellie-text! Close enough for the point, anyway!

Reardon had been playing Jimmy White a few days previously, with Smythe refereeing, and Smythe made two controversial decisions. One was awarding a free ball, when White and Reardon both disagreed ("My eyes," said Smythe, "tell me it's a free ball"); and the other was a Touching Ball call when Reardon saw a clear gap ("My eyes," said Smythe, "tell me those balls are touching.")

In the post-match interview, Reardon suggested that if Smythe's eyes told him it had been a free ball, and touching ball, then Smythe should have his eyes examined. This led to much excitement in the press.

At the match in the question, between Reardon and Spencer, the cue ball and red came to rest about two inches apart. Spencer called out "Touching balls!" Smythe pulled out his magnifying glass, and once the laughter had subsided, declared "Not touching!"

PS Assuming it is the same man, I have seen his name spelt in various apparently reputable sources as alternatively Smythe and Smyth - which is correct?
