Exactly so, kellie-text! That's the second half-point. For the first half-point, what had Spencer said, to the merriment of the crowd, to prompt Smythe to extract the magnifying glass?

So far Cyril is closest, and bongo is (very roughly) along the right lines, in that it is (in a roundabout, jocular way) what Spencer implied.

A biggish clue - Smythe's call was one that The Statman stated this week, someone on the forum, does not exist.

Spencer thought there was a flie on one of the balls and asked the ref to clean the cue ball after hitting the red and splattering the flie, leaving blood stains on both balls. As Smyth could not see any flie or stains, he took out the glasses to examine. After not spotting anything, he said Spencer had seen pigs flying.

I'll guess that John Spencer called John Smyth blind as a bat?

    A guess

Well done; I will update the scoreboard shortly.

wooheeee! ...and yes, initially got to that 14points answer as well, but thought it a bit of a waste of extra points.
Good question and happpy to see this thread revived btw.

Getting warmish, but not close enough for a half-point.

    ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN

During a match between Ray Reardon and John Spencer many years ago at London’s Eccentric Club, what did referee John Smythe famously state after examining through a huge magnifying glass a cue ball and a red ball that were a couple of inches apart, and what had Spencer said that had prompted Smythe to examine the balls so intently?

Half a point for each part.

There are two possible answers to this: One was mentioned earlier today in another thread, which is when the player asks if the cue-ball is touching a ball that is not on (in which case the ref would not automatically call it).

    What is the other?
By the way, what does the rule mean (Section 5, Rule 1(b)(i)) that

"(b) The referee shall not ...
    (i) answer any question not authorised in these Rules"?

Does that mean that if a player asks "Is this the last frame of the session?", "How are you?" or "May I borrow a hanky?" that the referee may not answer?

I agree that 12 can't be beaten. It is possible, incidentally, to make player A only able to tie, if player B makes a break of 11, but not to make snookers be required. (Player A breaks, pocketing all 15 reds and the black - a very common occurrence. Foul is 7, and leaves a free ball. Player B pots another colour as a "yellow" free ball, then yellow, green and brown, to go 18 ahead with 18 still on.)
