By the way, here is the updated scoreboard after round 188.
I have not given myself the ⅓ point, as I noticed that attilahun answered 2 of the 3 sections before I did, and chasmmi the other one before I did. All I did first was to answer all three together, but that scores nothing!
So I've added ⅔ to attilahun and ⅓ to chasmmi.

Year Defending Champion Progress Result
1978 John Spencer First Round 8-13 vs Perrie Mans
1979 Ray Reardon Quarter-finals 8-13 vs Dennis Taylor
Yep looks like The Statman has a point for this round....It was Joe Johnson getting to the 1987 final for Q1 and then John Pulman in the 60's for Q2 and Q3.
Another question anyone else?

1) Doherty / Johnson.... gonna go Doherty.
2) Gonna be Reardon or Spencer.... Gonna say Spencer.
3) As its not Reardon, and Fred and Walt exchanged there first wins, it must be Pulman.

Round 188
ROUND 188
Have 3 quick questions worth 1/3 a point each.
1) Who has come the closest to overcoming the Crucible Curse?
2) Who was the last first time winner to defend his title?
3) Who was the last first time winner to defend his title twice?
Have added Q3?!

No worries chasmni - if you include Reardon from before 1977 that would boost him up a bit also...

You see clearly I am an idiot as I missed a final somewhere for poor Jim Jim.
The list should have looked:
HENDRY - 115
WHITE - 108
DAVIS - 98
THORBURN - 59
EBDON - 53
WILLIAMS - 50
DOHERTY - 48
J HIGGINS - 43
TAYLOR - 41
REARDON - 36
STEVENS - 36
GRIFFITHS - 34
A HIGGINS - 33
DOTT - 32
JOHNSON - 30
PARROTT - 29
MANS – 25
SULLIVAN - 22
SPENCER - 21
SELBY - 18
MOUNTJOY - 18
BOND - 18
MURPHY - 16
The numbers being frames lost in a crucible final. Oh well, despite my incompetence it is 2 points to Dantuck and 1/2 to Alex0paul. Well done all.
