  • I think Davis needed snookers to win, but he could tie the frame. He did that, won the toss for the re-spotted black, decide to go first and potted the black.

Nice answer, rambon - but no, I do mean that Davis needed snookers in the conventional sense, i.e. that if Holt came to the table and played his shot without fouling (and never fouled at any visit), there would not be enough points left for Davis to catch Holt's score.

Well in that case, having fouled when trying to hit a colour, Davis gets put back in by Holt, to play from the original place. You thought he need snookers as he was effectively more points behind than there were on the table, but what you hadn't allowed for was Holt putting Davis back in. Davis got out of the snooker, potted the black which he played, then cleared up to win the frame.

One basic doubt about this answer is whether Davis's shot would have been called a miss as I'm not sure whether the potential seven points from the black counts as points that are on the table....

        • Holt inadvertantly threw his cue at the balls when Davis was on the shot thus giving Davis x for the foul he needed?

          • There are 2 reds left on the table - Holt pots a red to go 37 in front with 35 on. He then pots the brown to go 41 in front with 35 on - you then leave the room.

However, when playing the long brown the white goes around the table and ends up snookering Holt on the last red. Then Holts fouls and leaves a free-ball - and Davis clears up.

No, Holt has not played a shot since I left the room.

OK, halfway there! But I need more... why was Davis's shot called a miss, if he needed snookers?

(The potential 7 points from the black would not count as points on the table, when determining whether Davis needs snookers and therefore whether a miss can be called.)

Because he wasn't snookered on all colours

                    • There is only a red left with the colours. Davis pots the last red and is 19 behind. He tries to pot a difficult black which he misses entirely. 26 behind. Holt puts Davis in again and Davis tries again to pot the black which he misses entirley again. 33 behind. Davis now needs 2 (4 point) snookers to win. The cueball ended on the baulk cushion and is tricky to play. So, Holt puts Davis in again. You cant hold your nerves and off to the bathroom!

This time Davis pots the black, and goes 26 behind. Davis clears up all the colours and your just back in time to see the black going down.

I assume by this you mean that the referee called a miss and that Holt took the miss and put Davis back in from the original position?

In which case, congratulations PaulTheSoave - and rambon - I'll split the point!

Indeed, Davis was (say) 20 behind, with one red left, which he potted to go 19 behind. However, he did not finish on a colour, the yellow was near a pocket (but he was snookered on it) and he could see no safety to be sure of covering the yellow.

He therefore took on an extremely fine cut on the black, which he could see full ball, and missed it entirely - now 26 behind, as Paul said. The referee called a miss, Holt put him back in, and the same happened. Holt may now come to the table, 33 in front with only 27 on, with Davis needing snookers. I leave the room.

Normally, a referee would not call a miss when a player needs snookers, but she will in this case because full ball contact with the black was possible and Davis is partway through a potential three-misses-and-forfeit-frame sequence. Holt sees from his chair that he can't hit the yellow, remains in his seat, and nods to Michaela Tabb that he wants Davis back in.

Tabb warns Davis that failing to hit a colour this time will result in his losing the frame. Davis, nerves of steel, takes the same shot on for the 3rd time, this time snicks the black in, to go 26 behind, and then clears the colours as only he can...

                        Scoreboard to follow...

I've shared the point, rambon. What is crucial here is that Davis had just made two misses, and needed snookers after the 2nd miss but not after the first. (If he had needed snookers after the first "miss", no miss would have been called.)

                              ROUND ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY

This is another old one, but what is the highest break that can be made three times in the same frame?

You can assume that no mistake in procedure is made (such as the referee accidentally spotting a red instead of a brown so the frame is completed with 16 reds) and you can ignore re-racks (because the earlier part is considered void).
