      OK, elaborate....

that's not what I expected to read

if that was a free ball, and Jimmy is 8 points behind, he can name black as a free ball and pot the pink and then pot the final black, and he's the winner anyway... ?

because the referee didn't call a free ball? (this is getting embarrassing )

                        • therefore he was still 15 points ahead, as he hadn't fouled. White on the other hand couldn't use the free ball even, as he would knock the pink in anyway... So Davis wins.....

                              Congratulations snookersfun!!

Jimmy White had fouled just before I re-entered the room. With the sound off, my friend either did not know that Davis had nominated black as a free ball, or perhaps did not even know that he had the option of a free ball. (She might not even have known that White had fouled!)

My friend therefore did not realise that Davis had played a legal shot in striking the black, and snookering White on the pink. She thinks that White is now only 8 points behind and thinks that he can nominate black as a free ball, hit the black to knock the pink in, and leave the black over the pocket to seal frame, match and championship. She then believes that Davis has conceded the frame and match without forcing White to play these two easy shots, and dances in the room, believing Jimmy to be World Champion.

In fact, Davis remains 15 points in front. White is bound to foul on his next shot, and would then require 2 snookers. Jimmy, realising that his position is hopeless, has no option but to concede his 7th World Final. Davis, it will be no surprise to learn, becomes World Snooker Champion, for the 9th time.

                              Scoreboard to follow!
