  • I'd say he would pot the red and roll up behind a colour leaving a ridiculous snooker for Hendry, and in the end it goes to a draw and Davis pots the black.. making it twice?

    • No correct answers yet - they all contradict parts of the information given in the question...
"If anybody can knock these three balls in, this man can."
David Taylor, 11 January 1982, as Steve Davis prepared to pot the blue, in making the first 147 break on television.

But you don't recall this one, do you?

Not that I have a solution, but I will throw some stuff around:

1- mention of the blue was cheekily avoided, which leads me to think, Davis can somehow tie using the blue and therefore it will go to a respotted black, which Davis needs to get in at first try (+ win the coin flip as well, as Hendry is not supposed to come back to the table)

2- now 66 points behind doesn't necessarily point to a score of 66-0, there might have well been a foul involved on Hendry's disastrous shot (so, 70-4, 71-5, 72-6, 73-7 possible as well).

3-bearing (2) in mind Davis might even start off with a free ball, but there's my problem now: that would surely mean a minimum of three extra points (colour=red=1 point + minimum yellow=2 points), so why would all the baulk colours leave him needing snookers?

          Somebody think that through please...

Just following on from snookersfun, he begins with a free ball and pots it and a red simultaneously, then the free ball has effectively given him one extra point. A blue, clearance and respotted black will then give him the frame without Hendry coming back to the table.

              • I will share the point between snookersfun and Robert602, who between them have given a full answer! Congratulations!

"By the time that the Scot has potted the first 10 reds with colours, few ... expect Davis to return to the table" because Davis is now 70-0 behind and needs a snooker!

"But when Hendry badly misjudges his attempted pot of the 11th red..." by fouling and leaving Davis a free ball!

"Davis ...is 66 points behind..." - the score could be, perhaps, 70-4.

"Each time he makes sure to take blacks after the reds have been potted." but with his first stroke he potted the free ball and a red in the same shot, for 2 points

"Finally, he is faced with the 15th red..." - after 2 points for free ball + red, 7 points for the black, and then 3 more reds with blacks, Davis trails 37-70.

"He sees disappointedly that even if he were to pot the red, he would not be able to have any sort of shot on the pink either..." - disappointed because he needs at least the pink to be able to win - with blue, he can only tie.

"He could play position for a baulk colour, but ...if he did so, he would be left requiring a snooker!" - at 33 points behind, a red and baulk colour + the 6 remaining colours would leave him needing a snooker.

"He pots the red and – it turns out – pots the black twice more during the frame without Hendry getting back to the table." - yes, red, blue, the 6 colours, and then pots the respotted black at the first shot! Davis wins 77-70!

ROUND ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY SEVEN

The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, England, 12.17a.m., Tuesday 5 May 2009

                    Steve Davis 17 (35) 17 Stephen Hendry
                    …………………..0 ………..0

“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. The final frame. Stephen Hendry to break.”

Unbelievable! A repeat of last year’s Final. And, again, it’s gone to the deciding frame! Seven-time World Champion Hendry against seven-time and defending World Champion Davis. And in the next half hour or so, one of them will become an eight-time champion.

Twenty-three minutes later, we join Hendry at the table, with just one red left. The six colours are on their spots. As you can see, not a lot separates the two players.

                    Steve Davis 17 (35) 17 Stephen Hendry
                    …………………..42 …….42

But Hendry doesn’t seem to like the pot with which he is faced. Doesn't like it at all. Yes, the red is on, but from distance and very difficult – miss it, and it could finish anywhere. And the safety looks harder than the pot.

Hendry gets ready to take it on. A mobile phone goes off, and is quickly silenced. Hendry steps back, glowers at the audience, looks towards the commentary box, then at the referee, then at the trophy and sees his opponent, sitting expressionless in his chair, staring straight ahead. All is silent in the Crucible arena.

A minute later, he is down, lining up the red. Bang! In it goes! And perfect position on the black. The crowd applauds rapturously. The black follows; then yellow and green… but the white finishes tight on the cushion, leaving the brown very tricky! A long pause. He sinks the brown, to go 17 ahead with 18 left on the table! Blue then is frame ball, but it’s a thin cut to middle.

And... he overcuts the blue! Unbelievable! And it runs safe! So, still 17 points the difference, with 18 on.

And then begins a long safety battle on the blue. It lasts for nearly 10 minutes. Finally, Hendry makes a mistake. He leaves the blue on for Davis – tricky, but pottable. Davis wobbles it in, the blue drops – he is faced with a long pink! Davis rolls the pink from distance… it also wobbles – but unlike the blue, the pink stays in the jaws!!!! Hanging over the edge!

Hendry comes to the table – surely now the match is decided?! And, indeed, he pots the pink. It’s all over!

So who is now eight-time World Champion, and why?

(Yes, there's more than one possible answer for what could have happened! But you must give the answer for the point!)

He leaves the blue on for Davis – tricky, but pottable (He has the free ball as he can only see half ball although that hafl ball contact is enough to feasibly pot the blue however he goes for the black). Davis wobbles it in(black is down Davis now five behind), the blue drops (Davis is level)– he is faced with a long pink! Davis rolls the pink from distance… it also wobbles – but unlike the blue, the pink stays in the jaws!!!! Hanging over the edge!

I know this is all crapola.

                        Between those two sentences:
Hendry in fact made a foul and a miss (the mistake). Davis asks for a replay ... Hendry foul and miss again ...
This repeats until Hendy needs snooker or would need snooker if Davis pots the blue. Then

Davis wobbles it in, the blue drops – he is faced with a long pink! Davis rolls the pink from distance… it also wobbles – but unlike the blue, the pink stays in the jaws!!!! Hanging over the edge!
So Hendry cannot afford to pot the pink but he does.

I like it! Nice thinking! But no! If Hendry had hit the black first and given 7 away, he would not have "potted the pink" - a "pot" is a legal shot.

By the way, Hendry did not foul during the frame!
