You should update your own stats more often, that way I won't look so stupid!

    Round 210:

I vaguely remember something about the ref by mistake respotting a red instead of a colour, then it might be higher than 147 and even infinite in theory?

    • Oh yes I should have said – there is no mistake on the part of the referee or either player; the frame progresses totally correctly.

      • 154?

(If a player had a free ball on his previous break, potted a red, then missed a colour (Foul and a Miss) and was put in by his opponent - pots black, 15 red-blacks, and the colours).)

        • I should clarify - where I said above "potted a red", I meant potted a free ball as the red.

          • Congratulations davis greatest. 154 is the correct answer.

With all balls on the table, I foul and leave you a free ball. You take one as an extra red but fail to hit the colour after it, and a Foul and a Miss is called.

I decide to have the balls replaced, and this time (whether you did last time or not) you choose the black and not only hit but pot it. You get 7 points for that and still have the full 147 on the table, giving you a 154 break which did not itself contain a free ball!

                      ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND TWELVE

                      • ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND TWELVE

The referee, if asked a certain question by the player, will, according to the rules, answer "YES" or "NO". What is the question the player might ask?

There are two possible answers to this: One was mentioned earlier today in another thread, which is when the player asks if the cue-ball is touching a ball that is not on (in which case the ref would not automatically call it).

                        What is the other?

                        Comment

                        • Is the cue ball within the 'D'? (when playing from in-hand)

                          Comment

                          • Congratulations hegeland! Yes, when a player is in hand, when he has placed the cue-ball in his desired position, he may ask the referee if it is correctly placed (i.e. in the D or on the line) and the referee will state "YES" or "NO".

So here is the scoreboard after Round 212:

                            • ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN

                              Player A breaks off.

Player B comes to the table and makes a break that leaves player A needing snookers.

What is the theoretical lowest that the break can be?

As ever, unless otherwise stated, you can assume that this is a normal game of snooker, with scores at 0-0 at the start, in which no errors have been made by the referee or players. As indicated above, Player B makes this break on his first visit to the table, immediately after Player A has broken off.

NB the first person to give an answer which matches my lowest will get the point – or the first person to give an answer that beats mine as long as it stands up to rigorous scrutiny!
