  • I seem to remember that Ray Reardon had been unimpressed with one of John Smyth's decisions earlier in the match, or previous match or whatever, and suggested during an interval, in all seriousness, that John Smyth get his eyes tested.

And thus, John took the magnifying glass into the arena and, when the opportunity arose with the white fairly close to a ball, but blatantly not touching it, he took out the magnifying glass and carefully inspected the balls before declaring "NOT TOUCHING".

    Something like that.

Exactly so, kellie-text! That's the second half-point. For the first half-point, what had Spencer said, to the merriment of the crowd, to prompt Smythe to extract the magnifying glass?
"If anybody can knock these three balls in, this man can."

        • What a coincidence Statman is in London today! eh, Kellie?

          • Thinking back a bit, maybe in the initial incident, John Smyth declared "TOUCHING BALL" and Reardon had queried it and Smyth re-examined the balls and said "My eyes tell me they are touching".

And then, when this incident occurred, Spencer said something like "TOUCHING BALL?" and Smyth, having examined with magnifying glass, said "My eyes tell me they are NOT TOUCHING."

Other than that, I can shed no further light on the matter!

            • Congratulations, kellie-text! Close enough for the point, anyway!

Reardon had been playing Jimmy White a few days previously, with Smythe refereeing, and Smythe made two controversial decisions. One was awarding a free ball, when White and Reardon both disagreed ("My eyes," said Smythe, "tell me it's a free ball"); and the other was a Touching Ball call when Reardon saw a clear gap ("My eyes," said Smythe, "tell me those balls are touching.")

In the post-match interview, Reardon suggested that if Smythe's eyes told him it had been a free ball, and touching ball, then Smythe should have his eyes examined. This led to much excitement in the press.

At the match in the question, between Reardon and Spencer, the cue ball and red came to rest about two inches apart. Spencer called out "Touching balls!" Smythe pulled out his magnifying glass, and once the laughter had subsided, declared "Not touching!"

PS Assuming it is the same man, I have seen his name spelt in various apparently reputable sources as alternatively Smythe and Smyth - which is correct?

              • ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN

                Player A breaks off.

Player B comes to the table for one visit. Then Player A returns and makes a break that forces a respotted black.

What is the theoretical highest that Player A's break can be?

As ever, unless otherwise stated, you can assume that this is a normal game of snooker, with scores at 0-0 at the start, with no refereeing errors.
The first person to give an answer which matches my highest will get the point – or the first person to give an answer that beats mine as long as it stands up to rigorous scrutiny!

(Apologies to The Statman for any wording plagiarism.)

                    Not 72.

                      • Indeed, that girl knows her snooker, although she sometimes seemed almost reluctant to tell us in Belfast how much she really knew.

                        Round 216:

Free ball 8 extra points, make a 72 after that. Opponent free ball 5 points, make a 75 after that. Score then 80-80. Respot. In short, a break of 80 including a free ball.

Probably completely wrong but it's too late for my intoxicated brain.

Player A breaks off. manages to make a 7 point foul and leaves a free ball

Player B comes to the table for one visit. in which he pots free ball and 9 more reds with black for a total of 87 points to his side. Then fouls on next red (4 point foul sufficient) and leaves a free ball for player A

Then Player A returns and makes a break that forces a respotted black. 4 point foul + free ball and remaining 6 reds with blacks and all the colours to tie at 87 points (break of 83)

What is the theoretical highest that Player A's break can be? 83?

Higher is possible (and the above does not allow in the score for the points for the fouls).
