He missed the 13th red, and while he was missing his 147 attempt Ali Carter on the other table was on a break which turned out to be a 144 (including a magnificent yellow fired in a top pocket from its spot with the white tight on the baulk cushion – do see it if you get a chance) and denied Maguire the ten grand!

It was indeed Paul Medati, in I believe 1986 (or 85?). They even locked Medati away so he couldn't speak to the press at first and and ruin the story. Even when he did speak to them they painted a black eye on him!
