  • ROUND TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-EIGHT

If someone mentioned Willie Thorne, you might well immediately think of his missed blue. If someone mentioned Dennis Taylor, then 'that' black would almost certainly spring to mind. If someone said Alan McManus, one might recall that brown that rolled along the cushion rail a few years ago.

Who might bring up memories of a yellow? There are probably several potential answers, but I want the particular one that I'm thinking of.

The player name will win the point, if the circumstances of the yellow are described correctly.

Tony Meo, in the deciding frame of the Tolly Cobbald English Professional Championship, against Steve Davis. A member of the crowd shouted "Come on Tony", and he missed!

I knew that would be a frontrunner but that's not the one!

        • The yellow ball Thorburn had to take on during his 147 (the first one at The Crucible and therefore memorable) which was both a distance from both cue ball and pocket.

(although the fluked red was more important)

          • Did Joe Johnson miss a yellow on a 147 once?

Is that what you're thinking of?

              • A missed yellow makes me think of paul hunter and his world semifinal match with ken doherty in 2003

                best of 35 frames
hunter leads 15 frames to 11, and the 27th frame 62 points to 36 and he misses a simple yellow (frame ball)
doherty went on to win that frame and match 17-16

                  • Is it when Reardon used the yellow as a cueball and made a 147?

                    • Congratulations frameandfortunereturns!

Yes, Gary Wilkinson at the Crucible missed a straightforward yellow for a 147. He was later to say that when he was later told of the financial implications he was more upset than for missing the maximum.

in the second round against Stephen Lee, from 8-3 down, he won 13-9
in the quarters against Ronnie, from 8-2 down, he won 13-11

That is probably right. I know Eddie Charlton was 10-4 down against Throburn in 1978, winning 13-12; and was 12-9 down to Willie Thorne in the previous round before winning 13-12 – but not sure without looking it up whether he was five behind Willie at any stage.

He wasn't. His worst positions in that match were 7-11 and 9-12.
