ROUND THREE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY EIGHT

Given the currrent rankings who is likely to play in the 1,000th match at the Crucible this season? (Assume as well match order is same as last time!)

I'm not sure that it's easy to predict. Although the defending champion always plays first morning and first night, in the last few years the schedule hasn't simply been replicated from the previous year's going by the position of the match in the draw.

For example, King v. Davis, which was second match down in the draw in 2010, was played in sessions 9 and 12 (Monday and Tuesday evening). In 2009 and 2008, second match in the draw was played on Sunday and Monday morning. In 2007 it was Sunday afternoon and Monday night.

In fact, the two sessions of a first-round match one year might not even correspond with a complete match another year. Again with Davis-King as an example, being sessions 9 and 12 on table 1 - in 2009 session 9 was the first session of Perry-Cope but session 12 was the final session of Ebdon-Bond.

I have tried before to make some logical reason for the non-continuation of the drawsheet but I cannot find one. I understand that, apart from the defending champion's match, the first-rounders schedule is drawn at random.

It isn't even worked out that players who will meet each other in the next round finish at a similar time to give them roughly the same time off between matches. (E.g., Allen-Ford this year was finished on the second morning whereas Day-Davis(M) was played on Tuesday and Wednesday).

Even so, I'll guess Mark J. Williams.

Don't think we're going to get an answer on this one until April. I think the change in scheduling of round 1 matches, year to year, could have something to do with where the Chinese players are in the draw?

Think McLeod is correct. Jim Donnely was probably the first Scot to play there, followed by Ian Black and Eddie Sinclair.

Not quite, session 6 would have been the Sunday evening and session 7 the Monday morning. But the principle is the same.
