O'Brien is back in 2007, while the latest player (Y) is very recent.

Another clue, if it helps in any way... The player that comes on the list before O'Brien is Michael Holt.

Ok, here is the full list from Michael Holt onwards, including the repeating players:

..., Michael Holt, Neil Robertson, Fergal O'Brien, Marco Fu, Judd Trump, Marco Fu, John Higgins, John Higgins, Tian Pengfei, Neil Robertson, X, Y.

And there's another Neil Robertson just before Holt, if that helps.

So, who are players X and Y?

I think it is somehow related to breaks, such as being on the receiving end of the highest break at the cruicible for that year? No Idea who would come next if that is the answer.

Just clutching at straws though really!

I think it's a bit more obscure than that. Assuming it's one person per year, and Y is 2011 or 2010, then Holt is 2000 (or 99) and the Neil Robertson immediately before him is 99 (or 98) - ??!?!

No, scrap that - we know from earlier that O'Brien is 2007 so there are clearly more than one per year (possibly exactly two every with O'Brien was the second).

I see we might finally get somewhere.

To comment on some of the guesses... It's got nothing to do with high breaks, and it's not an exact number of players per year. There are a few chances every year, depending on how many tournaments are held. It's not something that definitely needs to happen, but it takes a good streak for it not to happen regularly.

I'm guessing it has something to do with qualifying for a tournament, then getting knoked out of the tournament proper in the first round on a deciding frame....

This question is ludicrusly difficult!

Sorry, I was hoping it would be something that doesn't get answered within the hour, but I wasn't expecting it to go unanswered for a month.

Perhaps a more useful hint then... The reason I said there would be no new names at least until February 2012 is that it's got something to do with best-of-9 matches, and the next ranking event with the best-of-9 format is the German Masters.
