  • I excluded everyone as well, only Jimmy White didn't appear in any later stages of all tournaments it seemed. So, I went for him.

    • Well at the risk of losing my own provisional point there was a guy called shawn budd who had a record of 0-9 in qualifiers that season but finding any other details about him is not exactly easy and he didnt seem to enter the 1996 worlds at all.

I actually can't find anyone who lost all of their openers in 98/99, although I haven't dug deep into the qualifying rounds yet.

And yeah, congrats on 500 Obli.
True, Alain Robidoux did win a couple of matches in 98/99 season. I took a look at the results of the tournaments in 98/99 season. I think there is no player who fulfils all the conditions in the quiz. According to my lil "research" only Ian McCulloch lost all his first round matches in the competitions he took part ( he wasn't in all of them) , but he wasn't in the draws for the Worlds in 95/96 season , neither in those for China Cup 98/99 .

Of course i reserve the right to be completely wrong !

gah! I thought it was Martin Clark - but he won one match in 1998/99 in he UK Championships beating Joe Perry 9-8!

I agree with everyone else, I don't think the criteria fits anyone.

McCulloch did lose all the first round matches he was in, but remember that he was ranked only 60th at that time, so he usually needed to win a few qualifiers to get that far.(ie, they may have been 'first' round, but they weren't his opening matches). For the record, he was knocked out by Drew Henry in the 1999 China International (6th qualifying round) and by Nigel Gilbert in the eighth qualifying round of the 1996 World's.

Shawn Budd did have a bad 98/99 season, losing every match (good find chasmmi) however I don't think he was ever ranked and he didn't enter the 1996 worlds either.

Credit goes to Statman and snooker.org for the info.

So come on Obli, what's the answer ?

                  • Alan's Season:

                    1997/98
Grand Prix: 2R 1-5 Paul Davies
                    UK: 2R 3-9 Shokat Ali
                    German: Qual. 1-5 Jamie Burnett
                    Welsh: 2R 3-5 Stefan Mazrocis
                    Scottish: 2R 3-5 David Roe
                    Thailand: 1R 4-5 Martin Clark
                    British: 2R 3-5 Karl Burrows
                    World: 1R 8-10 Matthew Stevens

Which essentially means he lost the first game he played for each of these competitions

                    • Err..yep , but that's 97/98 season , not 98/99 as it was mentioned in the first place , in the quiz! (" He lost ALL his opening matches in the 1998/1999 season.")

                      So i am officially confuzzled!

                      But congrats to Chasmmi!

Ps : Robert, thanks for the infos!

I meant to type in 1997/1998, but in fact wrote 1998/1999.
